Arcachon is a young town by French standards — its official birth certificate was signed by Emperor Napoleon III on 2 May 1857, at a time when the site was little more than a pine and oak forest inhabited by a few hundred fishermen and peasants. Within decades it had become a fashionable seaside resort for the Bordeaux bourgeoisie, and today its seafront is lined with elegant Belle Époque villas and grand architecture that give the town its distinctive character.
Your day begins at the water's edge, among the oyster sheds that have defined life around Arcachon Bay for generations. The bay is France's foremost oyster-producing basin, and a tasting here — fresh Arcachon oysters from the Banc d'Arguin, served with a fresh baguette, lightly salted butter, and a glass of local white wine — is an experience that belongs to this place alone. Your guide will recommend a seafood restaurant for lunch, several of which face directly onto the bay and can be reserved in advance.
At the southern entrance to Arcachon Bay, the Dune du Pilat rises to 107 metres above sea level — nearly 3 kilometres long and 500 metres wide, making it the highest sand dune in Europe. Advancing inland at a rate of around 5 metres per year, it is as much a geological phenomenon as a natural spectacle. From the summit, the view across the bay, the Atlantic, and the vast Landes pine forest stretching to the horizon is simply extraordinary.
For a different perspective entirely, embark on a private boat tour aboard a Pinasse — the traditional flat-bottomed wooden vessels that have been used on Arcachon Bay since the 1500s, originally built for fishing and oystering. This leisurely cruise takes you past the working oyster farms, the protected bird sanctuary of Île aux Oiseaux, and its famous Tchanqués cabins — two wooden huts perched on stilts above the water, which have become one of the most iconic images of the Basque and Gascon coast.
