The wines of Sauternes are produced thanks to the action of a fungus, Botrytis Cinerea that causes the grapes to rot. This process is called the noble rot when it comes to take place on healthy grapes and under a favorable climate.
The local climate of Sauternes during the summer time is usually composed of morning mist followed by warm and dry afternoons which has the effect to dry the grapes, reduce the water content and concentrate the sugar. The result is the making of an intensely sweet, gold colored wine with strong aromas of honeysuckle, blossom and stone.
From Bordeaux, reach Château d'Yquem & the Sauternes wine region
Your private Anthology tour begins with pickup from your accommodation in Bordeaux and a scenic drive to the rolling vineyards of Sauternes. On arrival at Château d’Yquem, a dedicated estate host welcomes you for a guided private visit that reveals the property’s history, terroir and singular approach to winemaking.
During the visit you typically:
Stroll through the vineyards and learn how soils, slopes and microclimate shape Yquem’s unique style.
Visit the vat room and historic cellars, discovering the strict berry selection, pressing and long aging process that underpin the estate’s legendary wines.
Gain deeper insight into the estate’s philosophy, emblematic vintages and the art of crafting long‑lived Sauternes.
A rare occasion to explore the nuanced variations of Château d’Yquem, this Anthology experience culminates in a trilogy tasting of three exceptional vintages: Château d’Yquem 2016, 2010 and 2006. Guided by the estate ambassador, you compare how each vintage expresses its own personality and brilliance, while delicate culinary delights are served to complement the wines and elevate the tasting. After this gastronomic moment, your driver‑guide will take you back to Bordeaux.
