The wines of Sauternes are produced through one of the most extraordinary processes in winemaking: Botrytis cinerea, known as noble rot — a fungus that, under the right climatic conditions, concentrates the sugars, acids, and aromatic compounds within each grape berry to a remarkable degree. The microclimate unique to Sauternes makes this possible: morning mists rising from the Ciron river encourage the fungus to develop on the skins, while warm, dry afternoons slow its spread and allow the gradual desiccation of the fruit. The result is a wine of deep golden colour and extraordinary complexity — honeysuckle, dried apricot, blossom, and saffron — with the potential to evolve and improve in bottle for decades.
Your Private Initiation Experience at Château d'Yquem
Your tour begins with pickup from your accommodation in Bordeaux, followed by a scenic drive south through the Graves and into the rolling vineyards of Sauternes. On arrival, a member of the château's team welcomes you for a private guided tour of the estate. You will walk through the vineyards to understand how the specific terroir, grape varieties, and microclimate of this hilltop property shape Yquem's unique character, then visit the winemaking facilities and historic cellars to discover the meticulous berry-by-berry selection process, the long barrel ageing, and the blending philosophy that underpin the estate's enduring reputation.
The Initiation Tasting: Château d'Yquem 2016
The visit concludes with a focused tasting of a single vintage — Château d'Yquem 2016 — guided by the estate's ambassador. Together you will explore the aromatic profile, texture, and balance of this celebrated year, placing it in the context of Yquem's long history and understanding how it reflects the specific conditions of that harvest. It is an intimate and deeply instructive introduction to one of the world's most remarkable wines. After the tasting, your driver-guide returns you to your accommodation in Bordeaux.

Enjoying wine is a wonderful part of discovering France’s culture and heritage. We encourage guests to savor each tasting responsibly and at their own pace. Please remember that wine contains alcohol, and moderation helps you fully appreciate the flavors, keep a clear head throughout the tour, and make the most of your experience.
Please also note: In France, snacks are usually not provided during wine tastings to preserve the purity of the wine's flavor. We recommend having a good breakfast or lunch beforehand.
