Key Provence wine appellations

  • Châteauneuf-du-Pape: The great red wine appellation of the southern Rhône, producing powerful, complex blends dominated by Grenache, often with Syrah, Mourvèdre and up to 13 permitted varieties. The appellation also produces a small quantity of exceptional white wine. The galets roulés — large rounded stones — covering the vineyard floor are one of the most distinctive sights in French wine country, retaining heat and reflecting light onto the vines. A full day in Châteauneuf includes two estate visits, cellar tours, and guided tastings of both red and white cuvées.

  • Côtes de Provence Sainte-Victoire: A distinctive sub-appellation of the Côtes de Provence, located in the hills east of Aix-en-Provence beneath Cézanne's iconic Montagne Sainte-Victoire. Produces elegant rosés, mineral whites and structured reds from family estates in a beautiful, relatively unspoiled landscape. A half-day tour from Aix visits two carefully selected domaines with guided tastings of Provence rosé, white and red wines.

  • Cassis AOC: One of France's smallest appellations, producing a crisp, mineral white wine — largely Marsanne, Clairette and Ugni Blanc — that pairs brilliantly with the local bouillabaisse and seafood. Often combined with a Calanques boat ride for a full coastal and wine day.

Wine tour formats

  • Half-day Côtes de Provence small group wine tour: A focused afternoon in the Sainte-Victoire wine region — two family domaines, guided tastings of Provence rosé, white and red. Maximum 8 guests, all tasting fees included, from the Aix Tourism Office.

  • Private Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine tour (full day): The same Châteauneuf experience reserved exclusively for your party, with winery selection tailored to your interests and flexible timing throughout. Hotel pick-up in Aix included.

  • Private Côtes de Provence wine tour (half day): A private half-day wine experience in the Sainte-Victoire hills — ideal as an afternoon addition to a morning in Aix or as a standalone experience for wine lovers with limited time.

What's included on all Provence wine tours

  • Expert English-speaking wine guide with specialist Provence and southern Rhône knowledge.
  • Wine tastings at 2 selected estates (all tasting fees included).
  • Comfortable air-conditioned minivan with Aix Tourism Office meeting point or hotel pick-up.
  • Vineyard and cellar visit with guided commentary on soils, varietals and winemaking.

When to visit

Provence wine tours run from April to October. Lavender season (late June to mid-July) makes vineyard visits particularly spectacular in some areas.

Harvest (September–October) is the most exciting time in the cellars, with active fermentation and a festive atmosphere at the estates. Spring visits are quieter and the hillside landscapes are at their most colourful.
