[description] =>
Discover Bordeaux, the Sleeping Beauty, on this private tour. Inscribed as a Unesco World Heritage Site since 2007, it is one of the most fascinating French towns classified a “City of Art and History” and home to one of Europe’s largest collection of 18th Century architecture.

Discover an impressive architectural ensemble that includes the neoclassical Grand Theater, the Golden Triangle district and the Rohan Palace that is today's Bordeaux Town Hall. On this walking tour of Bordeaux, admire ‘Place de la Bourse’ architecture, sculptured décor and water mirror that bring out a sense of unity that celebrates the tight union between the city and the Garonne River.

Your accredited/licensed tour guide can be flexible on the itinerary but will definitely include the most famous landmarks

Pick up at your Cruise Ship in Bordeaux

Today, we will come and pick you up directly at your Cruise ship in Bordeaux. Meet your English-speaking tour guide who will go over the itinerary and program of this private walking tour of Bordeaux with you. Then begin to make your way towards the historical city center of Bordeaux.

The Golden Triangle

Under the name of Golden Triangle lies a district of Bordeaux that englobes Cours Georges-Clemenceau, Cours de l'Intendance and the Allées de Tourny. These three very large streets form a Triangle of which each tip ends with a square: Gambetta, Comedie and Tourny. Historically, this is where all the most luxurious shops and financial institutions were located. In the 18th century, the wealthiest persons of Bordeaux started building Private Mansions, vaste and luxurious city houses, built for a single family and its servants.

Place de la Comédie

This impressive square is located between the Grand Theater of Bordeaux and the houses that face it to the west. The impressive portico composed of 12 Corinthian columns of the Grand Theater, designed by architect Victor Louis, dominate the whole composition of the square. The Theatre was inaugurated in 1780 and originally the ground sloped up so that carriages could drive inside the colonnade. In 1899 the building is classified as a Historical Monument. Today, the Theater is home to the National Opera of Bordeaux.

The Grand Theatre

The inauguration of the Grand Theatre of Bordeaux took place on April 7, 1780. It took Victor Louis more than 7 years to achieve the construction commissioned by the Governor of Guyenne, Louis Armand du Plessis, Duke of Richelieu. Built in a Neoclassical style, the Grand Theatre impresses with its main façade composed of a portico of 12 Corinthian columns above which stand 12 statues - nine muses and 3 goddesses of Classical Mythology.

Place de la Bourse

The Royal Square, today Place de la Bourse, is considered to be the most elegant façade located on the quays of Bordeaux. Initially, the architectural program completed the installation of a statue of Louis XV that was inaugurated on the 19th of August 1743. Construction of the square took more than 25 years and the hard work of two 'Intendants' (Civil Officers) and three architects. The architectural style is directly modeled on the works of Mansart for Versailles. Eventually, the statue of Louis XV was taken off its basement in 1792 and replaced by the fountain of the Three Graces.

The Rohan Palace

The Palace was built between 1171 and 1784 by architect Bonfin under the patronage of Ferdinand Maximilien Mériadec de Rohan. The Rohan Palace, after being the siege of the Archbishop of the revolutionary court and an imperial Palace, is today the Town Hall of Bordeaux since 1835. Inside, behind its Louis XVI style facade, is one of the most beautiful staircases of France a masterpiece of stereotomy. The Rohan Palace faces the Saint Andrew Cathedral and Pey Berland tower.

If you are interested in other visits of Bordeaux, don't hesitate to browse our other walking tours that begin with Place des Quinconces and include a visit of the quartier des Chartrons district linked to the wine growing history of Bordeaux and that we mention on our wine tours.

[name] => Discover Arcachon's Charm & Pilat Dune: Private Bordeaux Shore Trip
[durationMinutes] => 480
[minimumNoticeMinutes] => 41760
[shortDescription] => Discover Arcachon Bay on this private shore excursion from Bordeaux to Bassin d'Arcachon. Climb Arcachon Dune du Pilat, Europe’s Largest Sand Dune. Reach Cap Ferret by boat or take a Pinasse du Bassin Boat ride. Taste Arcachon Oysters.
[description] =>
Embark on a vibrant Shore Excursion from Bordeaux Port of Call to beautiful Sea side resort of Arcachon

Arcachon is a popular bathing location on the Atlantic coast 55 kilometers (34 miles) Southwest of Bordeaux and makes for a perfect day trip as a private custom tour. It has fine sandy beaches and a mild climate said to be favorable for invalids suffering from pulmonary complaints.

The town of Arcachon is only 150 years old. Not long before 2 May 1857, when Emperor Napoleon III signed its official “birth certificate”, it was just a forest of pine trees, oaks and strawberry trees (arbutus), with no road links, and home – mostly when the weather was expected to be warm, and more in wood huts than in real houses – to fewer than 400 people, mostly fishermen and peasants.

In earlier years, when some hygienists began to recommend sea bathing, three sea establishments were laid out by some entrepreneurs especially for the Bordeaux bourgeoisie. At its southern entrance from the Atlantic Ocean, Arcachon Bay is crowned by the largest sand dune in Europe, the Dune de Pyla (or Dune du Pilat), nearly 3 kilometres long, 500 metres wide, reaching 107 metres in height, and moving inland at rate of 5 metres a year.

Begin your private small group day trip from Bordeaux to Arcachon

Today leave the bustle of Bordeaux on this astonishing day tour and head towards this land locked sea known as “The Arcachon bay” where fresh oysters and the Dune of Pilat will be on your program. In the morning, we will come and pick you up directly at your Cruise ship in Bordeaux. Meet your English-speaking driver/ tour guide who will go over the itinerary and program of the day.

Travel in a spacious, premium minivan

Your private Bordeaux Shore Excursion to Arcachon will take place in one of our very spacious Mercedes Minivans. This vehicle can take up to 8 persons. All our vehicles are equipped with an on board P/A system that allows you to hear the commentary of your driver/guide no matter where you are seated. Also, there is free Wi-Fi access on all tour vehicles. Bottled water is also available in all our vehicles.

Upon arrival, discover the oyster sheds that are laid in rows one next to each other and that belong to the local oyster farmers that make this destination so well known to all French oyster aficionados. Here we will organize an oyster tasting session. To taste fresh Arguin Banc oysters surrounded by the bay on one side and the pine forest on the other is quite an experience.

Typically, the oysters are accompanied with fresh baguette, lightly salted butter and a glass of white wine. For those who do not appreciate oysters or seafood there is always an opportunity to taste other local dishes including cold meats or grilled sausages. Wine tasting is always available in any case as you are close to one of the most famous wine regions of the world.

For lunch, your guide will certainly suggest one of the many high-quality sea food restaurants located along the shore. Of course, it will be time to pair your food with local Bordeaux wines.

In the afternoon a number of options are possible:

Option 1 - Head to Pilat and climb Europe's largest sand dune.

After a short drive from Arcachon town, reach the highest sand dune of Europe located in the small town of Pilat sur Mer. During the summer season, a staircase is put in place so that it is easier to climb the Dune without damaging the area.

This means you will have to make some effort to reach the top as there are 170 stairs to climb. Once at the top, discover the natural beauty of the landscape and admire one of the most stunning views of the Bay, the sand beaches and the pine forest in the back.

Option 2 - A traditional Private Pinasse Boat Tour on the Bay

Book a unique boat ride on board a local “Pinasse”, the traditional boats of the Bay of Arcachon. All built out of wood, mention of the boats date back to the 1500’s at a time when they were used only for fishing. This pleasant ride will have you see the numerous oyster farms and admire ‘Birds Island’ with its “Tchanqués” huts built on wooden piles. You can also include some oyster tasting, picnic & wine to enhance your experience.

Option 3 - Enjoy some free time in Arcachon and shop for local arts & crafts that make for great souvenirs

Any of these options can be chosen during the booking process. Tour returns to your Cruise Ship at the end of our services.

[description] =>
In the morning, after we have picked you up directly from your Cruise Ship in Bordeaux port of call, come and discover one of the most fascinating French towns that has just recently resurrected. Classified a “City of Art and History” and home to one of Europe’s largest collection of 18th Century architecture that was classified as UNESCO world heritage site, discover big-ticket attractions such as the neo-classical Grand Theater or Saint Andrews Cathedral.

Pick up at your Cruise Ship in Bordeaux or Bassens Cruise Port

This morning, we will come and pick you up directly at your Cruise Ship in Bordeaux. Meet your English speaking local guide who is an expert of Bordeaux, its architecture and of course its wine. After going over the itinerary and program of the day with you, it will be time to board your premium A/C vehicle and begin your panoramic tour of Bordeaux.

Commented panoramic tour of Bordeaux

Once you have boarded your premium vehicle, your panoramic tour of Bordeaux can begin. Sit comfortably and begin to learn about the history of Roman 'Burdigala' and how wine making began 2000 years ago. All our minivans are equipped with an onboard P/A system that allows our guides to make live commentaries during the panoramic tour and everyone will hear perfectly no matter where you are seated in the vehicle. If your vehicle is a sedan, no need for a P/A system.

Your driver/guide will drive you through the large boulevards or narrow streets of Bordeaux to have you see the most important landmarks of the city. Admire Place des Quinconces, the most emblematic square of the town and one of the largest squares in Europe. Formerly the location of Château Trompette, built next to the Garonne River, this fortress was part of a larger military architectural ensemble that was built when France finally recovered Bordeaux from the English. The square also features the Monument to the Girondins as well as huge statues of Montesquieu and Montaigne.

Discover the Golden Triangle of Bordeaux

Your panoramic tour of Bordeaux will then move on to the heart of the City nicknamed the ‘Golden Triangle’. Defined by three Boulevards, including high-end Cours de l’Intendance, the heart of Bordeaux is without a doubt Place de la Comédie. This large square features the Grand Hotel de Bordeaux to one side and the Grand Théâtre on the other. This masterpiece of 18th-century architecture was designed by Victor Louis who also designed the Comédie Française in Paris.

Bordeaux River Front & famous Landmarks

Other highlights of this private panoramic tour include the Place de la Bourse (Stock Exchange) located next to the River where the now famous water mirror lies. More Big-ticket attractions and sights include the Cathedral of St Andrew, Pey Berland square and tower as well as the bustling Rue Sainte Catherine, one of the longest shopping streets of Europe. After your panoramic tour of Bordeaux, it will be time for us to head towards the Saint Emilion wine region of Bordeaux.

Saint Emilion Village & Wines

Saint Emilion is famous for 2 things: it is a charming medieval village & the area produces one of the most famous wines of the Bordeaux wine region. After your private panoramic tour of Bordeaux, begin to make your way to the Saint Emilion wine region. The short 45 minute drive is perfect for an introduction to the Bordeaux wine region by your driver/guide. Learn about the different grape varieties that are allowed to make Bordeaux red wine, the different appellations of the area as well as how the wine is blended to make the final wine. You will also learn about the history of the region and how much of it was an English possession for more than 300 years.

Wine Tour & Picnic in a Bordeaux Chateau Winery

Your private shore excursion continues with a wine tour & picnic in a carefully selected winery of the right bank. Upon arrival at the Chateau, discover the winery and taste the premium wine of the Chateau. Then, grab your picnic basket and enjoy a wonderful picnic prepared with local produce. Of course, all our picnic options are accompanied with the local wine. You can also purchase more wine directly on site, at the Chateau. All the wineries where the picnics take place have been carefully selected by our team of travel experts for their unique setting, landscape and quality of the products prepared and wines tasted.

Saint Emilion Village Visit

After your picnic, your driver/guide will take you to the village of Saint Emilion for a visit of this charming medieval town. Stroll through the quaint, cobbled streets of this medieval town, while your tour guide recounts local history, from the days of the 8th century hermit Emilion, to the 19th century mining galleries, which still lie beneath the village.

Important historical sites include the Romanesque cloister and the Monolithic church carved into the limestone cliffs, also known as the underground monuments. Since this is a private tour and our guides have a privileged access to this monument, we can organise a private visit of this attraction on your private tour if you are interested in mixing culture & wine.

After the visit of the village and some free time for personal discovery, it will be time to make our way back to Bordeaux. After a short drive, we will drop you off at your Cruise Ship in Bordeaux or Bassens and that will be the end of our services.

[shortDescription] => Visit & Wine taste in a Saint Emilion Grand Cru Winery followed by a Visit of Unesco Classified St Emilion village. Your small group private shore excursion will be conducted by an English speaking driver guide, expert in Bordeaux red wines
[description] =>
Embark on a vibrant Shore Excursion from Bordeaux City or Bassens Port of Call to the Saint Emilion wine producing region!

Today we will come and pick you up at your Cruise Ship in Bordeaux city or Bassens Cruise Port. Meet your English speaking guide who is an expert on Bordeaux Wines. Your driver / guide is also a certified guide which means that he or she is licensed to conduct tours in historical villages such as Saint Emilion and has access to monuments and museums that are not accessible to those that do not possess this licence.

Once you have met your guide, he/she will go over the program and itinerary of of this tour from Bordeaux. Then, board your comfortable, air conditioned Mercedes minivan and begin to make your way to the Saint Emilion wine producing region.

Travel in a spacious Minivan

Your private Bordeaux Wine Tour to Saint Emilion will take place in one of our very spacious Mercedes Minivans. This vehicle can take up to 8 persons. All our vehicles are equipped with an on board P/A system that allows you to hear the commentary of your driver/guide no matter where you are seated. Also, there is free Wi-Fi access as well as bottled water in all our vehicles.

Wine & History combo on a Saint Emilin Half Day Wine Tour

This private half day small group wine tour packs a lot of delights into a few hours. On this exclusive private tour for 2 to 8 persons maximum of St Emilion organized by Ophorus, you will enjoy tasting delicious classified growth Bordeaux red wines. Add to this the rich historical attractions of this UNESCO World Heritage site and you see why the half day option makes for such a great tour.

Depart from Bordeaux and reach the right bank wine region

Starting in the city of Bordeaux, a short drive in a comfortable air-conditioned minivan brings you out of the city to the picturesque countryside plains and rolling hills of the right bank wine producing area. This is the heart of Bordeaux's famous wine region, where many vineyards carry the Saint Emilion AOC designation. Each of these local wineries produce vintages with distinct soil features backed by a long winemaking heritage.

Your first major stop on this personalized Saint émilion half day trip will be in one of the local estates for a visit and wine tasting at one of the Grands Crus Classés Chateau's. Here, we have scheduled an appointment for you. You will be greeted at the Chateau and will get to discover the vineyards, tour and taste different vintages in this carefully selected domain.

The wines are a blend of Merlot grapes with deep, bold flavors, along with other local grape varieties, especially Cabernet Franc and, to a lesser degree, Cabernet Sauvignon. A local guide of the winery will reveal all the steps in the wine production process for you, as well as share some historical details about the estate.

Your Ophorus guide will be with you during the visit so don’t hesitate to ask any questions. All our driver/guides have great knowledge about wines and they will be happy to share any basic or more technical information concerning French or Bordeaux Wines. Whether you have questions about history, technique, flavors, aromas, food & wine pairings don’t hesitate to ask them anything that relates to wine to make this half day a very special one.

Then visit a most charming medieval village

Following your wine tasting session, your private half day trip in this Bordeaux wine region continues with a guided walking tour of the eponymous village.

It is no coincidence that Saint Emilion has been awarded the UNESCO World Heritage status in 1999. After the walk, enjoy some free time to explore on your own in the village. Why not enter one of the many wine cellars to continue your tasting session? Finally, you will head back to Bordeaux where the wine tour concludes after having learned a lot about this famous wine producing area. We also provide a full day shore excursion from Saint Emilion.

A Famous monk, a cave and centuries of wine making

Perched on a hilltop overlooking the Dordogne Valley, the picturesque rooftops and medieval stone buildings of the beautiful village of Saint Emilion are a delight to the eye. A unique microclimate and Saint Emilion’s fertile soil made the area a haven of wine making.

This tradition goes back to the later centuries of the Roman Empire. The first vineyards were planted here in the second century AD. In the fourth century, the Roman poet Ausonius already mentioned the delicious grapes of Saint Emilion.

The legend of Emilian

The first indications of human settlements in the area date back to the Roman Empire, but the story of Saint Emilion starts in the eighth century AD. At that time, a monk from Brittany, fleeing persecution in his hometown of Vannes sought refuge in one of the natural caves near the settlement of Ascum Bas.

Although he lived the simple and secluded life of a hermit, Saint Emilion allegedly performed several miracles from his Aquitaine hideaway. Soon, his renown spread far beyond the town and region, bringing pilgrims and disciples from far afield to visit him. The small settlement grew fast as it became a religious center. After Saint Emilion died, his followers made sure he would be remembered by giving the town of Ascum Bas the new name Saint Emilion.

Much later, monks developed more intensive and widespread vineyards. This is when the reputation for Saint Emilion wines started building towards what it is today. The rich Merlot-based blends of these fertile plains have given local wines a great appeal, and several wines produced in chateaux near Saint Emilion have been given the highest possible awards under the French appellation wine rating system.
