Taste delicious wines

Medoc wines produce wonderfully perfumed yet very intense french wines. Margaux wines have a distinctive fragrant taste, attributed to the high gravel content of the soil in these vineyards. The soil’s excellent drainage means the plants need to root down further to find moisture, making them particularly strong, and bringing up the flavors of the deeper earth.

The Haut Medoc appellation is vast, with almost 400 different wine producers operating there, the different wineries produce wine that have a wide variety of textures and flavors. If time permits, your guide will try and organise a stop at Chateau Margaux for photo opportunities.

Alsatian wines, and more specifically the Grands Crus, are considered to be among the most delicious french wines.

Three Commented Grands Crus Wine Tastings

The Grand Crus of Alsace were created in 1975 and feature 51 classified areas defined according to strict geological and climatic criteria. The designation is attributed to wines satisfying a number of quality-related criteria: strict limitations on terroir, highly restricted yields, specific rules of conduct regarding the vines, minimal natural ripeness levels and taste . The appellation Alsace Grand Cru recognizes the most exceptional terroirs, which impart to the wines an expressive character and a unique authenticity. The size of these exceptional vineyards varies between 3 and 80 hectares. Only 4 grape varieties can be used to produce Alsace Grands Crus wines: Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and Muscat (Alsace variety). Discover these unique Grands Crus wines during an exceptional day out in the Alsace wine region.

This private full day wine tour has been crafted so that you may have the privilege of tasting some of the most outstanding Alsace white wines. Your wine tour in Alsace will first take you to the Ribeauvillé wine producing region. Here, taste fabulous Rieslings that originate from the Kirchberg (marl and sandstone), Geisberg (marly limestone) and Osterberg (calcareous marl)Grands Crus. The hallmark of Ribeauvillé wines is their minerality. In fact, while most Grand Cru Rieslings have 1.5 g solids/liter, Ribeauvillé wines often reach 2.5 g/liter. Some of the most famous wine makers that produce these Grands Crus include Trimbach or Louis Sipp.

Then, move on to discover a most unique and confidential Grand Cru: Kaefferkopf (literally ‘beetle head’). Divided into several sectors of the charming little town of Ammerschwihr, this Grand Cru is characterized by a complex geological substratum, combining granite on its upper parts with shelly limestone and sandstone lower down. Depending on availability, it will also be the moment to discover biodynamic wine making (a form of alternative agriculture very similar to organic farming, but which includes various esoteric concepts) in wineries such as Domaine de Weinbach or Domaine JB Adam.

Finally reach the southern part of the Alsace wine route and discover emblematic Grands Crus such as Steinart, Goldert or Hatschbourg. It is in this part of the wine region that you will discover local Muscat. Alsace Muscat is distinguished from the sweet Muscats of the South of France by its dry character. Extremely aromatic, it expresses wonderful flavors of fresh fruit. We will also have you taste some exceptional Gerwurtztraminers that originate in the Hatschbourg Grand Cru. These are full-bodied wine, with solid structure and a round fullness. In tasting these wines, one rediscovers the complete aromatic palette, often with the addition of liquorice. Harvested very ripe, “late harvest” and “Selection de Grains Nobles” Gewurztraminers ranging from sweet to viscous, possess exceptional richness and extraordinary aromatic complexity.

A bit of History

The origin of the town of Beaune can be dated back to the 1st century BP when the Romans decided to build a fortification that lied at the crossroads between two of their most important ways. One linked the town of Lyon to Trier (Germany) and the other linked the town of Besançon to Autun. The town became prosperous in the 12th century thanks to the wine trade and its urban area expands outside the castle walls, erecting remparts that can be still seen today.

The town was at the time the Capital of the Duchy of Burgundy and the first Burgundian Parliament met at Beaune in 1227. During the middle ages, the town then organized itself around three major locations: the market square (that is today Place de la Halle), the Collegiate Church of Notre Dame (the old historical town center) and Place Carnot where the Parish Church used to stand.

The streets of Beaune have kept a number of houses and buildings that date back to those days, from Romanesque houses to 18th century private mansions. The town's past is also closely linked with religious life. Other than the Romanesque Clunisien style Collegiate Church of Notre Dame that dates back to the 12th & 13th century, a number of Abbeys and Convents still occupy a large proportion of the urban space.

Today, most of the buildings belong to wine merchants who have found an ideal location to store their wines. The Hospitaliers religious order also left their print in the town of Beaune with the most famous construction being the Hôtel-Dieu, built in a Franco-flemish style, and that dates back to the 15th century. There is a second Hôtel-Dieu named Hospice de la Charité that is a good example of 17th century architecture.

Hotel Dieu des Hospices de Beaune

The Hôtel-Dieu was a medieval hospital that featured vast halls for beds for the sick. Founded in 1443, the Hôtel-Dieu in Beaune is a two-storied construction that occupies three sides of a courtyard. In one of its wards is a Museum dedicated to Rogier Van der Weyden's great Altarpiece - The Last Judgement that was commissioned by Nicolas Rolin, the last chancellor of the Burgundian Dukes and the hospital's builder.

The Hospital was built to help the persons who had suffered from famine and poverty after the Hundred Years War. As you visit, discover the kitchen, the pharmacy and the vast hall with its wooden beds and red curtains that maintain some kind of privacy. The Hospices is also famous for the wine auction it organizes each year with wine produced from 53 hectares of vineyards that were donated to the hospital through the centuries. This Charity Sale is held every year in November.

Basilique Notre Dame

Beaune, located on the way to Jerusalem, was a popular stop for all the pilgrims wanting to make their way towards the Holy Land. Because the number of pilgrims that pass through the town in the 12th century is considerable, the Dukes of Burgundy decided to build a larger Church than the existing one, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The beginning of the construction of Notre Dame Collegiate Church dates back to the second half of the 12th century. The architectural style of the Basilica was inspired by that of Cluny. The largest part of the Basilica is in the Romanesque style.

This sanctuary has kept rich furniture ranging from the Romanesque period to the 17th century. There are also important remains of 15th century wall paintings that you will discover during your visit. Notre-Dame de Beaune is known worldwide for its tapestries depicting Virgin Mary’s life; they are presented in the Basilica’s Choir.

This exceptional collection dates from the 16th century. The major events in Mary’s life are evoked in successive scenes. This set of tapestries was restored by the Hôtel-Dieu de Beaune’s nuns in 1852.

Grosse Tour

Beaune is a fortified town located in the heart of the prestigious Burgundy wine region. One of the four towers built in the early 16th century, it is decorated on the boulevard side with the coat of arms of the governor of Burgundy, La Trémouille. It played a role in monitoring the plain by watching the Route de Verdun, the nearby Saone forming the frontier between the French kingdom and the Holy Roman Empire until 1678.

Thus the guard saw the arrival in 1569 of the 40,000 Germans answering Condé's call, and then in 1636 the army led by Gallas that ravaged, pillaged and set fire to the faubourgs. Purchased in 1891 by the Maison Calvet from Bordeaux, it was used by this wine merchant as a prestigious tasting room before being acquired by the municipality. Its roof is laid out as a pleasure garden.

Begin the day in Les Eyzies de Tayac for a guided visit of the National Prehistory Museum. Established in July 2004, the museum houses some 18,000 pieces and a collection of six million artifacts. The museum’s collections were established as early as 1913, when indefatigable researcher Denis Peyrony convinced the French state to acquire the Château des Eyzies, built at the end of the 16th century, and to transform it into an excavation warehouse that could double up as a museum.

The museum possesses the largest collection of prehistoric artifacts in the world. Follow your guide and discover the main chapters of the Hominids’ development through an anthropological frieze and a brief reminder of Africa’s history, starting with the early Australopithecus.

Continue to Montignac where you will visit the brand new Lascaux IV cave – opened in December 2016. For the first time, all of Lascaux is revealed. A complete new replica retraces the discovery of the famous decorated cave.

But that’s not the end of the adventure: the entire site inquires into the position that Lascaux occupies in cave art and its relation to contemporary creation. The opening of the International Center for Cave Art marks the beginning of a new adventure combining the emotion of ancestral art and an important technological achievement.

Here, the reproduction of the original lascaux cave has been so precise that it would be difficult for even the most talented experts to find any flaws. Follow a guided tour with a local guide of the museum and then take some time to visit the exhibitions and the center for prehistoric cave art.

End with the Visit of Rouffignac Cave

Finally, end the tour with the visit of Rouffignac Cave that possesses state of the art original cave paintings as well as authentic etchings and drawings. The Rouffignac cave was already mentioned in 1575 by François de Belleforest. In his ” Cosmographie universelle” he cites “paintings and animal traces”.

In the 19th century, the cave was known as a tourist attraction. Famous archaeologists like Henri Breuil, André Glory and Martel had visited the cave in the early 20th century, but it was only in 1956 when Louis-René Nougier and Romain Robert, two prehistorians from the Pyrenees, rediscovered and confirmed the cave art.

As you arrive, board an electric train and descend a near 2 kilometers deep to admire the artwork located inside the cave. The small train makes a few stops in front of spectacular drawings and etchings. Finally, reach the bottom of the cave for a stop of a few minutes. Disembark the train and just a few steps away arrive and admire the ceiling of the cave where a large amount of drawings are present.

Usually isolated or organized in a frieze, here the 66 animal representations seem to have been placed in a disorganized way, swirling over a large suction funnel that leads to a well that allows an access to the second floor of the cave. Mammoths are omnipresent, Rhinoceros, Bisons as well as Horses make up the rest of the bestiary. More unusual, all the representations of Ibex are located here, completely absent from the rest of the cave.

Then, board your comfortable, air conditioned minivan and begin to make your way to Eze. You’ll take the Moyenne Corniche, enjoying a panoramic view of Nice and the Bay of Villefranche-sur-Mer, before arriving at Eze village.
