Alsace Enchantment: Villages, Wine & History from Colmar

Meet Your Local Alsace Guide

Your Alsatian adventure begins at the designated meeting point in Colmar, where your friendly and knowledgeable English-speaking guide awaits. Look for the tour sign featuring the recognizable Ophorus logo for a seamless connection; all our guides proudly wear nominative badges for easy identification.

After introductions, your guide provides a detailed overview of the day’s itinerary. Then, step into a comfortable, air-conditioned Mercedes minivan equipped with an onboard P.A. system, ensuring everyone can enjoy insightful commentary throughout the scenic journey along the Alsace Wine Route.

Immerse Yourself in Picturesque Eguisheim

Your first stop is the charming village of Eguisheim, nestled amidst rolling vineyards just outside Colmar. Explore its narrow, concentric streets lined with vibrantly decorated half-timbered houses, flower-filled balconies, and traditional fountains that showcase classic Alsatian architecture.

Eguisheim is often cited among the most beautiful villages in France and is a perfect introduction to the region’s blend of winegrowing tradition and medieval charm.

Discover the Medieval Gem of Riquewihr

Next, continue your journey to the captivating town of Riquewihr. Encircled by ancient ramparts and surrounded by vineyards, Riquewihr offers a remarkably preserved 16th-century setting with narrow streets, fortified walls, and colorful houses creating a harmonious display of architecture.

Enjoy free time to wander through the town, browse boutiques and wine shops, and savor a delicious lunch (not included) in one of its inviting winstubs or restaurants.

Drive the Scenic Alsace Wine Route

In the afternoon, the tour unfolds with a scenic drive along the legendary Alsace Wine Route. This 170‑kilometer route winds between the Rhine Valley and the Vosges Mountains, offering breathtaking views of vine-covered hills, flower-adorned villages, and church steeples rising above the rooftops.

Along the way, keep an eye out for impressive medieval castles perched on the hillsides, which once controlled trade routes and defended the region’s strategic passes.

Wine Tasting in a Traditional Alsace Village

In one of these charming villages, you’ll stop at a local wine cellar for a commented tasting. Sample some of the region’s renowned white wines, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, and Sylvaner, and learn how Alsace’s unique terroir and climate shape their expressive aromas and flavors.

This tasting is a relaxed opportunity to meet local producers, ask questions, and better understand how vineyard location, grape variety, and winemaking choices influence each wine.

Conclude Your Day at Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle

Your journey concludes with a visit to the majestic Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle, a formidable fortress overlooking the plains of Alsace. Originally built in the 12th century, the castle occupied a strategic position controlling important medieval trade routes between the Rhine plain and the Vosges passes.

Join your guide for a tour of the ramparts, courtyards, and furnished rooms, and enjoy commanding views over vineyards, villages, and forests stretching to the horizon.

Return to Colmar

After your castle visit, relax on the drive back to Colmar. This full-day tour is a perfect blend of villages, wine, and history, showcasing some of the most iconic sites along the Alsace Wine Route.

Don’t miss this opportunity to experience the scenic villages and vineyards of Alsace—book your spot today and join us as we unveil the beauty, history, and flavors of this remarkable region.

Kingsley_T 17, Jan 2026 We took this tour on a very cold snowy day in January and it was still fantastic. The roads were too bad to go to the castle but our guide led us to an additional town, and we had a little more time to thoroughly explore all the other beautiful towns in the region.

Robin_G 29, Dec 2025 Guide - Jerry was terrific. He was informative, excited, interested, kind, and professional. He took time w everyone in the group and we thoroughly enjoyed our day. Highly recommend. Thanks for a terrific day!

josep_F 24, Oct 2025 Interesting and funny. Guide very experienced, nice and a well planned day trip. Castle visit maybe. Overvalued

kguffey9932 30, Sep 2025 We had a great day exploring the Alsace villages and really enjoyed our small group guided tour of the castle. So you know, the wine tasting is at the very end of the day at a specific winery. I would have preferred trying wines throughout the day at different wineries because we really didn't enjoy the wine we were served. Our tour guide was great and the van was very comfortable.

Lynn_W 21, Sep 2025 We traveled in a comfortable van, in a small group with a very kind, professional guide. We thought about doing this trip using ride shares or public transportation but are so glad that we did this tour instead. We honestly couldn’t have fit it all in, and we learned so much more from our guide, Alan. This is a wonderful way to have a personal and informative tour of Alsace.

Barbara_R 14, Sep 2025 The Alsace tour was incredible! Thierry was so knowledgeable and entertaining! I highly recommend the tour.
  • 5
Catherine_W 13, Sep 2025 The description for the tour was as described. We were given details about the meeting point and what we needed to know. Our guide Thierry was great: explained the sights with personality. We had a wonderful time and highly recommended this tour.

moniqueh344 04, Sep 2025 The success of a tour starts with the tour guide. We were fortunate to have Myriam, a very efficient and knowledgeable professional tour guide who also is refreshingly enthusiastic about sharing her love for the region. She kept all eight members of the group engaged during the whole eight-hour tour in a pleasant and non-overwhelming tone. The activities are well planned, we had a good walk in the magnificent castle, and a superb drive among the vines, with great stops at elevated vista points, and efficient stops in the villages. Myriam even added two villages to the program because we had time. We learned a lot about the region's geography, history, traditions and culture, as well as about the wines, and with that, we could enjoy even more our solo explorations in the following days.

matthewfB3605QZ 30, Aug 2025 My mom and I took the Alsace's Gems Day Tour from Colmar with Myriam. She is a fantastic guide and the tour was amazing. We visited the Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg which was outstanding and several extraordinarily beautiful villages. Myriam also included several additional small stops along the way. Myriam provided the perfect amount of information and also allowed time to explore on our own. Highly recommend this tour.

Kaarina_S 26, Aug 2025 Thierry was a first class guide! We thoroughly enjoyed our experience of wine tasting, village tour and local castle tour and it overall enhanced our trip to the area!
  • 2
Nagarajan_C 10, Aug 2025 Professional tour company and the guide. Personally I didn't find this tour being much value for money. Two village stops and a castle for less than 7 hours or so... not a great value for the price being charged. Definitely couldn't understand what was referred as wine tasting as a last step at the center of Colmar. The hop on hop off bus costs less than 30 Euros to tour the villages.

Danica_H 09, Aug 2025 Our guide was phenomenal! He was thoughtful, knowledgeable and patient. At the end of our tour there was an unexpected rain storm and he was completely prepared with umbrellas and a continuous positive attitude. He was outstanding!

sniemi2015 27, Jul 2025 If I could give more stars, I would. Thierry made our day one of the most magical ever. From his interesting inside knowledge of the castle to the most exiting details of each enchanting village, our group was educated, entertained and delighted. Would love to return some day to do more tours.

Ilir_B 23, Jul 2025 A nice combination of history, picturesque landscapes and villages, and wine tastings. Great guide, very knowledgeable and kind.

Kathy_R 19, Jul 2025 Great small group tour! It was just the right size and everyone was good about getting back to the van on time. Jeremy our guide was very informative and great to spend the day with. Even with a bit of rain this was an interesting and informative tour. There was really a lot to see. I truly enjoyed it!

STEVEN_R 14, Jul 2025 This Tour was outstanding. We saw so much more by taking this tour than we could have accomplished on our own. The villages were beautiful and the castle was very interesting. Our tour guide Myriam was knowledgeable about the castle and the villages. She made our day enjoyable and we feel lucky to have had her as our guide.

Kathy_T 12, Jul 2025 So, so informative. Such a great mixture of history and personal stories and a real connection to the culture. Gems is descriptive as the places we visited were outstanding. Thank you!
  • 5
Gina_E 10, Jun 2025 Our guide, Arthur, was amazing! A lot of information about all the towns and sites we visited. I was disappointed that the wine tasting was in the city of Colmar at the end of the tour. It would have been much nicer if the tasting had been at one of the many wineries on the wine route. Also, more time in each village to explore on your own after the walking tour - maybe add an hour to the tour and allow an extra 30 minutes in each town?

rubymaec2022 27, May 2025 Our tour guide Author was a great tour guide and very friendly. We traveled with 8 people in total and it was fun to get to know everyone. The castle is beautiful and I’m glad we got to see it in the tour. The tour ends with a nice wine tasting back in colmar. Worth the money!! Especially if you only have a few days in France.

brucev199 11, May 2025 An excellent experience. Our guide was Art(h)ur, who organized things for the six of us very well, wisely starting the day at the impressive Haut-Koenigsbourg castle, which involves a fair amount of walking and stairs. Next a brief (unadvertised) stop at Hunawihr, with its fascinating hillside fortified churchyard, then charming Riquiwihr, a mini-Colmar, where a recommended lunch spot was excellent. Another brief stop at a Franco-American WWII memorial before Kayersberg, another well-preserved late medieval/Renaissance town divided by the pretty Weiss River that flows east to the Rhine, with a ruined castle looming atop a steep hill. A medieval church has a stunning medieval altarpiece. The stop at a chocolatier was a great idea. Finally an informative wine tasting back in Colmar. Art(h)ur was charming, well-informed, and drove calmly. Each tour will have its own itinerary, probably, based on season and weather—we had a beautiful spring day—but my guess is that this outfit is nimble and will make the best accommodations possible.

ralphl911 01, May 2025 My wife and I ended up with a private tour with Alain as our guide. Even though the tour accomodates eight people, we were impressed that the tour went ahead even with only two people. Alain went out of his way to make the tour as interesting and informative as possible, even stopping at an unscheduled spot memorializing American troops in World War II. He clearly knew the history and details for everything we saw and we highly recommend this tour.

James K 27, Jan 2025 I went with my partner and I had the most amazing tour of my life in all of Europe and highly recommend it. The guide is knowledgeable and answers questions about everything and anything. The guide has been in this industry for more than 20 years so he knows what he is doing.

Juliette M 07, Apr 2024 Our tour was great! Amelie was a wealth of knowledge and very accommodating to our group throughout the day. She has a wonderful personality!
There was only my husband and me and one other couple on the tour. We loved talking with and sharing the experience with them. I expect we will be FB/Instagram friends for many years to come! Thank you, Amelie and Ophorus Tours for a wonderful day!

Ruth E 20, Sep 2023 This trip was amazing. Was more than we ever expected. Damien was superb with his knowledge and his humor and entertainment . Would highly recommend this fairytale tour. It was like standing still in a fairytale book. Absolutely wonderful experience we will never forget ..

Alistair Y 19, Jun 2023 Great trip, wonderful countryside and ancient monuments, castles, and small
towns .Thiery was a wonderful guide, informative, knowledgeable, and witty,
amusing, with personal and regional anecdotes to fill in the narrative .

Genuine Alsation, and proud of it, with the local knowledge to go with it,
made the day so entertaining. Coped admirably with a vehicle problem,
always professional, courteous, and considerate with his passengers, so a
potential problem became a minor one, with no adverse effects.
So glad we booked this tour and had this guide . Made a good holiday into a
    great one

A true gentleman in every sense of the word.

    Thanks, Thierry, and Ophorus

Angela L. 01, Apr 2023 It was wonderful in every way! Damien was a beautiful person who was engaging, knowledgable, and made the entire trip so fun! It rained the entire day but the villages were so beautiful that we didn't mind. We learned so much about the architecture, Alsace Lorraine, and its history and importance through medieval times into the present. It was amazing to see three of these villages and then the Castle! This trip was well worth it and we had a great time!

Pete S 05, Nov 2019 Highlight of our trip !
This tour was truly one of the highlights of our trip! We were able to see villages that would have been difficult for us to visit, since we weren’t driving. But more than that, Jean-Yves was so informative, entertaining and just plain fun - he gave us a day that we couldn’t possibly have had on our own. His knowledge of the villages and general area, as well as history and, of course wine (!), made our day with him a delight. We would highly recommend this tour and guide.

kathyk144653 29, Sep 2019 Great day trip from Colmar !
We were very happy we chose the small group Gems of Alsace tour from Colmar. The group consisted of us snd another couple and we found we were very compatible. Our guide was very accommodating and personable. We visited the castle Châteaux du Haut Koeningsborg which was very interesting. Even though it was a cloudy day we could see quite a ways from the chateau set in the Vosges Mountains. We visited 3 picturesque towns: Ribeauville, Riquewihr, and Turckheim. Enjoyed the wine tasting at Caves Dopff and found the wines reasonably priced and delicious. Lunch was on our own and we found a lovely bistro for our meal. We are traveling via train and this tour allowed us to visit places and have experiences we wouldn’t otherwise had. Happy to recommend it highly.

    Travellady1040 01, May 2019 Fantastic Day!

We chose this tour because we did not have a car and wanted to see several of the Route des Vins towns as well as Haut Koenigsbourg Castle. The tour was superb! We were driven in a small van that seated seven people comfortably. Our guide, Aude, spoke excellent English and was very knowledgeable and friendly. She answered everyone’s questions and had great suggestions for places to eat and things to do on our own in each of the towns. We visited Ribeauville, Riquewihr, and Kaysersberg. Each town was lovely. The wine tasting in Riquewihr also was magnifique. All in all, a wonderful, full day exploring the picturesque small towns of Alsace.

In addition we saw many more villages from the van without stopping but the effort still count. All together we stopped at 4 villages. Our guide was really wonderful, thoughtfull and full of information :)))
