Pick up at your Ship in Bordeaux
Begin your day at the Bordeaux river cruise port and set off into the gently rolling vineyards that surround the medieval town of Saint Emilion, a UNESCO‑listed landscape where wine, limestone, and history have been intertwined for centuries.
With your private driver‑guide, you follow quiet country lanes lined with vines and stone farmhouses before reaching the hilltop village, crowned by Romanesque bell towers, monolithic churches, and narrow cobbled streets with panoramic views over the surrounding appellation.
Saint Emilion village experience
As you explore the historic center, your guide shares stories of monks, pilgrims on the route to Santiago de Compostela, and the merchants who helped make Saint Emilion one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious names, while pointing out cloisters, underground cellars, and viewpoints above the vineyards. There is time to browse atmospheric wine shops carved into the rock, sample local specialties such as canelés or the traditional Saint Emilion macaron, or simply sit on a café terrace and soak up the village atmosphere between visits.
Château visits and tastings
The wine experience unfolds across three carefully selected estates, giving you a clear picture of Saint Emilion’s diversity—from Grand Cru Classé châteaux with formal architecture and extensive barrel cellars to smaller family‑run domaines where the owners are directly involved in work in the vines. At each stop, you tour the facilities, learn about grape varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet Franc and the influence of limestone soils, then sit down for guided tastings that allow you to compare blends, vintages, and styles across the appellation.
Wine education and lunch
Your guide explains the Saint Emilion classification, how to read labels, and offers practical advice for pairing these structured reds with food or selecting bottles to enjoy back home. Lunch is planned in the village (at own expense), match local dishes to the wines you have been discovering throughout the morning. Guide will make appropriate suggestions.
Return to Bordeaux docking port
In the afternoon, a final estate visit deepens your understanding of the appellation, with the possibility to taste more terroir‑driven cuvées or compare different ageing approaches before you drive back towards Bordeaux.
You return comfortably to the cruise port with a richer sense of Saint Emilion’s wines, its long winemaking tradition, and the remarkable cultural landscape that earned it World Heritage status—an ideal full‑day shore excursion for cruise guests seeking an authentic and educational Bordeaux wine experience rather than a simple tasting stop.

What to know before your tour?
Enjoying wine is a wonderful part of discovering France’s culture and heritage. We encourage guests to savor each tasting responsibly and at their own pace. Please remember that wine contains alcohol, and moderation helps you fully appreciate the flavors, keep a clear head throughout the tour, and make the most of your experience.
If you want to share your tour with others, you can put it on Cruise Critic. Most of the time this gives good results. You must do this yourself as we are not accepted on their site as a professional business. We accept split payment transactions by credit card.
