Discover Rocamadour Village with an Expert Guide
Our journey begins as we head towards the pilgrimage and fortress village of Rocamadour, nestled gorgeously above a tributary of the River Dordogne. This charming village derives its name from the association of St Amador or Amadour, whose relics were discovered in the heart of the sanctuary in 1166, giving rise to the name "roca" (cliff).
Prepare to be enchanted by Rocamadour's historical monuments and the revered Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which has attracted pilgrims from all corners of the world for centuries, including kings, bishops, and nobles.
Accompanied by your expert guide, wander through the medieval streets of the village, reaching the steps that lead to the middle section, where the church square, Place St Amadour, awaits, surrounded by its seven sanctuaries.
Ascend the Great Staircase, consisting of approximately 216 steps, an iconic path pilgrims once climbed on their knees during the Middle Ages. As you ascend, listen to captivating stories and historical anecdotes from your guide.
Explore the Monastic Buildings in the Sanctuary
Upon arrival at the sanctuary, your guide will provide an introduction to its significance. Keep an eye out for the legendary sword of Roland, known as Durandal, embedded in the cliff. According to the legend, Roland, Charlemagne's nephew, threw the sword from the battlefield, ensuring it would never be wielded again, and it miraculously landed in Rocamadour.
Step inside the renowned Notre Dame Chapel, part of a remarkable 13th-century chapel complex. Your guide will share the story of the Black Madonna statue, a magnificent walnut tree carving from the 12th century. Admire the ship models suspended from the ceiling, offered by grateful survivors who attributed their rescue from shipwrecks to the Black Madonna's intervention. Legend has it that the miraculous bell in the chapel would ring once for each saved ship.
Marvel at the exquisite 12th-century frescoes depicting the Annunciation and Visitation, adorning the walls of Notre Dame chapel. Afterward, enjoy some free time to explore at your leisure, taking in the atmosphere and charm of Rocamadour.
Stroll Through the Enchanting Saint Cirq Lapopie
Continuing our full-day tour, we make our way to the delightful village of Saint Cirq Lapopie, renowned as the most beautiful village in France. Its strategic position on a steep cliff 100 meters above the Lot River has contributed to its exceptional preservation, making it akin to an open-air museum.
Recognized as the "Most preferred village of the French" in 2012, Saint Cirq Lapopie has captivated visitors from around the globe. It gained popularity among artists after Post-Impressionist Henri Martin discovered its charm, and writer André Breton made it his home.
Upon arrival, join your guide for a leisurely walk through the historic part of the village, preferably starting from the bottom and ascending towards the top, offering numerous opportunities for breathtaking photos. Marvel at the architectural wonders dating back to the 13th to 16th centuries, as you immerse yourself in the enchanting ambiance of this remarkable village. Take advantage of some free time to further explore and savor the beauty of Saint Cirq Lapopie.

We met Marion our Tour Guide and driver at the Place Pasteur bus stop which was a short walk from our Best Western Hotel Le Renoir.
Our first stop was the cave of Pech Merle that still bears amazing and authentic cave art of a woolly mammoth, spotted horses, reindeer and hand prints and stalactites and stalagmites. This cave is important to see before it closes to the public.
Our second stop was the medieval village of Saint Cirq Lapopie which sits on a steep cliff above the river Lot. We were fortunate to be there during the Renaissance Festival and saw many people in medieval costumes. This was our lunch stop and we chose Restaurant Bar Lapopie as recommended by Marion. The food and wine was excellent, and our waiter provided excellent service.
Our last stop was Cahors to see the only remaining medieval bridge in Europe, the Valentré bridge. This amazing bridge has 3 towers and is only open to foot traffic.
Marion was an excellent guide who provided historical commentary throughout the scenic trip to these places and answered any questions we had. Merci Beaucoup Marion!
