Great Market & Culinary tour today in Sarlat. The explanation of the history of Sarlat and the architecture was really interesting and we saw and heard many things that we would have missed walking round Sarlat ourselves. The tastings were so well done, so thank you to all of the host food and drink establishments that were so welcoming. We learned a lot about the local cheeses, wine, foi gras, walnut tarts and cake. All wonderful to taste! We returned to them all later in the day to buy our favourites. Thank you especially to our guide Benoit, who made the whole tour such a great experience. He was extremely knowledgeable and answered any questions we had. The groups are small, which is a bonus. We highly recommend the tour for anyone visiting Sarlat.

Anna was our guide and she was absolutely wonderful. Folks should know this tour is an overall experience and understanding of Sarlat-La-Caneda. Walking to historic spots, learning about the 1200 year old history of the town, and seeing the elements of its relatively recent renaissance. Learning of the emotional meaning of many landmarks for the local people added to the heart of the tour. Along with this is a taste of the foods Sarlat is known for and an immersive experience in the Sarlat Saturday market. Our family enjoyed this very much- there wasn’t any part of it that was poorly structured or handled. We’ve been on a lot of food tours all over the world and this was in the top 3 for sure!
We spent a wonderful day with our driver, Rodolphe, who drove us from Bordeaux to the Dordogne region and back. We toured absolutely beautiful chateaus and gardens, but the highlight of the day was Rodolphe. He was professional, timely, and personable. Rodolphe speaks excellent English, but was very generous in helping us with our very limited French. He’s a warm, charming fellow with a great sense of humor. Perfect day for us! Thank you again, Rodolphe and Ophorus!

We had a fantastic full day tour with Karim, visiting the Lascaux caves as well as Sarlat and several other beautiful villages. Karim was the perfect guide: laid back, funny, engaging and extremely knowledgeable on a variety of subjects. He also recommended a great lunch place for us while in Sarlat. While the drive to and from our pickup in Bordeaux was long it went by quite quickly thanks to the comfort of the van and Karim’s hospitality. Highly recommended! Thank you so much Karim!

We had an excellent day yesterday !! Rodolphe arrived early and took us to all expected places in the Dordogne ! The weather held up fairly well given the forecast ! Lunch was great with our guide !
He had so much information and he was more than willing to share it ! We covered all topics that included wine, food, baking, politics (American and French), the art of boudin, driving and trucking in France ! We did not miss much and the commentary was endless, in a good way ! Great to know the stories and perspective from a local. It was a good day with, in our view, an excellent guide, ‘Rudolph the reindeer without the red nose’. Thanks for setting this up, much appreciated.

I wanted to give you some feedback on our tour guide, and our time at Lascaux and Font-de-Gaume.
My wife and I remain very grateful that we were able to visit these two sites, and have with us a knowledgeable tour guide and driver, Karim. His knowledge on many subjects elicited many discussions back and forth, and the three of us were comfortable enough to disagree in our views.
His knowledge, and his ability to convey this to us in English, obviously not his native tongue, was greatly appreciated. At Lascaux, our tour was in English, and this allowed Karim some time by himself. But once our time in the "cave" was over, we reconvened over lunch, and spoke about what we had seen, the various theories about the art and its creation, and how Lascaux fit into the cave art in the region.
At Font-de-Gaume, our tour of the cave was in French, and while the cave guide did her best to address our language difference, together with my rudimentary knowledge of your language, and the fact that Karim accompanied us into the cave, made all the difference. He explained to us what the guide was saying, and at times, added a bit of his own knowledge to the presentation.
At no time during the tour did my wife or I feel uncomfortable in the vehicle. We felt safe, and at no time did we worry about his interactions with other drivers on the roads.
In retrospect, we wish that we had been able to spend more time in Bordeaux, and to possibly avail ourselves of his knowledge in the vineyards.

Now that my wife and I have returned to New York City from our rather extensive 50th wedding anniversary vacation, I wanted to give you some feedback on our tour guide, and our time at Lascaux and Font-de-Gaume.
My wife and I remain very grateful that we were able to visit these two sites, and have with us a knowledgeable tour guide and driver. Karim Laveille.
In retrospect, we wish that we had been able to spend more time in Bordeaux, and to possibly avail ourselves of his knowledge in the vineyards. But we're both of the age that we realize that we'll never see or experience everything, and that which we can, and were able to do, was thorough, accessible, and of great interest.

The guide Martin was excellent, knowledgeable, entertaining, friendly and very helpful. I had traveled
out of my way just for this tour and was happily pleased. Sarlat was a very interesting town to visit also.
The caves and paintings were wonderful but I think I enjoyed Martins tour of the Museum best of all.

Tour was as advertised and the guide Ben spoke clearly in English. Very informative and the tastings were great. Well worth it . Just a heads up : Market day in Sarlat is crowded
Quick answers
What is the best time of year to visit the Dordogne?
The Dordogne is beautiful year-round, but late spring and early autumn are particularly special — the crowds are smaller, the light is golden, and the seasonal produce in the markets is at its peak. Summer is the busiest period, with Sarlat especially lively in July and August. Winter visits have their own charm, particularly if the truffle season (December to February) is of interest.
Can we visit a specific château or prehistoric site?
Absolutely. As a private tour, the itinerary is flexible. If there is a particular château — such as Beynac, Castelnaud or Milandes — or a prehistoric site you are keen to visit, simply let us know at the time of booking and your guide will do their best to accommodate your request. Please note that entrance fees to paid sites are generally not included in the tour price.
Is lunch included?
Lunch is not included in the base price, but the Dordogne is one of France's great gastronomic regions and your guide will be happy to recommend excellent local restaurants. Dining in Sarlat or at a riverside village is very much part of the experience, and arrangements can be made in advance on request.
Is this tour suitable for families with children?
Yes — the Dordogne is a wonderfully family-friendly destination. Prehistoric caves, dramatic châteaux, river landscapes and hands-on markets all tend to captivate younger travellers. Your guide will adapt the pace and content of the day to suit the ages and interests of everyone in your group.
Is Sarlat market worth visiting and when does it take place?
Sarlat's famous market is widely considered one of the finest in France. The main market days are Wednesday and Saturday mornings, when the old town fills with stalls selling truffles, foie gras, cheeses, walnuts and seasonal produce. If your visit falls on a market day, your guide will make sure to include it in the itinerary.
What will we see and do on this tour?
The tour combines the very best of the Dordogne — the medieval streets of Sarlat, the dramatic river valley with its clifftop châteaux, prehistoric sites, and the region's outstanding local food culture. As a private tour, the itinerary can be tailored to your interests, whether that is history, gastronomy, prehistory, or simply soaking up the scenery.
How far is the Dordogne from Bordeaux and how long is the journey?
The Dordogne region is approximately 120 to 150 km east of Bordeaux, around 1.5 to 2 hours by car depending on your destination within the region. All transport is included in your private tour — your driver-guide will collect you from central Bordeaux and return you at the end of the day, so you can simply sit back and enjoy the journey.
