After the king's passing, Catherine de Medici claimed ownership and expelled Diane de Poitiers.
During Catherine de Medici's tenure, the chateau underwent lavish renovations and was renowned for hosting extravagant nighttime festivities, including the first-ever fireworks display in France in 1560. Over time, the Chateau de Chenonceau changed hands, with notable figures such as Louise Dupin, known for her literary salon attended by luminaries like Voltaire, Montesquieu, Buffon, and Marivaux. The renowned philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau served as Louise Dupin's secretary and tutored her son.
In more recent history, the castle was acquired in 1913 by the Menier family, esteemed chocolatiers, and remains in their possession to this day.
