Follow a certified tour guide in the Grande Ile, a Unesco World Heritage site, around the old pedestrian areas, the Cathedral and the Petite France neighborhood. Pick up by your guide at your centrally located Hotel
For this private walking tour of the beautiful city of Strasbourg, your guide will come and pick you up at your hotel or accommodation in central Strasbourg. If you are not based in Strasbourg and are coming from outside, we will suggest a convenient meeting point where to meet your guide.
The Cathedral
Begin your private 2-hour walk in Strasbourg. The old city centers around its Gothic cathedral, Our Lady of Strasbourg, built of red sandstone and described by Victor Hugo as a “gigantic and delicate marvel”! Follow your expert guide for the Cathedral* visit including the marvelous façade that provides one of the finest picture books of the Middle Ages that you will ever see.
The hundreds of sculptures which almost seem to leap out at you from the wall make great use of light and shadow effects. Another major attraction that your guide will comment on are the stained-glass windows dating from the 12th and 14th centuries and that form a particularly enchanting sight along with the rose window.
Finally, the highlight of the visit to the Cathedral of Notre Dame is the amazing Renaissance astronomical clock. Built in 1843 it features an orrery, a rotating display of the sun and moon, a planetary calendar, and even a mechanical rooster. Each day at around 12:30, the bird crows and a conga line of apostles issues forth from the clockworks, led by a little Christ.
* Please note that the audio headset rental that is compulsory to visit the Cathedral is included in the price.
The Old Town & La Petite France district
After the visit of the Cathedral, reach the Petite France district. Historically, this was the poor section of the city occupied by mills and tanneries, both of which depended on the river and its downward flowing branches to support their work.
Today, the neighborhood is one of the most charming of Strasbourg with its colorful 16th and 17th century half-timbered houses such as the ‘Maison des Tanneurs’ that your guide will certainly point out.
Your private guided tour in this charming area will lead you to our final stop: a series of fortified bridges and their three towers. This succession of three bridges linking arms with the Ill River is dominated by three 14th century towers, remains of the ancient medieval ramparts, which totalized 90 towers. The bridges themselves were once capped by a wooden roof.
Of course Strasbourg offers so much more including the visit of the German district, the visit of the European Parliament or the different Museums located in the Palais Rohan. Since this is a private tour don't hesitate to reach out to our team of travel advisors if there is a highlight of Strasbourg that you would like to include on this tour.
After your tour, why not join one of our half day or full day trips from Strasbourg to the most important landmarks of Alsace along the wine route?

Ramirez27, Sep 2023Florence (“Flo”) was our guide in Strasbourg. She was cheerful, and delivered her stories in a light-hearted way that made it a pleasure to spend time with her. We were already enchanted with the Grande île portion of Strasbourg before the tour. Flo’s in-depth comments about life there centuries ago further enhanced our experience in that special place. When we shared with Flo our struggle of being unfamiliar with Alsatian cuisine and dinner menus in French and German, she proposed a quaint little place “Lohkäs” and a particular menu item. As it turned out, we found ourselves at that exact restaurant that evening and enjoyed one of the best meals of our trip!

William_M05, Mar 2020Discover Strasbourg, old and new.
This was a great tour, full of surprises. Discover the numbers and names above the doorways. Learn
about the conversion of a dilapidated, rat infested prison into a school training France’s politicians. See
one if the world’s oldest astronomical clocks. And much, much, more from an excellent guide.

Kathy P31, Jul 2018The tour was just terrific, all thanks to our wonderful tour guide Danielle. She met us promptly at our hotel and then walked us through lovely Strasbourg, pointing out the history and significant structures, including Strasbourg's Notre Dame Cathedral, just gorgeous! Danielle was very personable, her English is excellent and she indulged my efforts in French and even pointed out good bakeries and got us samples of Alsatian macaroons coconut YUM! Highly recommend this tour with Danielle!

Quick answers
Where will we meet our licensed tour guide?
Your guide will meet you directly at your hotel or accommodation in Strasbourg. If you are coming from outside, we will set a convenient meeting point for you. The end of your guided walking tour in Strasbourg will take place in the city center.
Is your Strasbourg guided walking tour adapted to everyone?
Our Strasbourg walking tours involve an important amount of walking. Even though our walking tours tend to stay on easy to walk sidewalks and streets, the city of Strasbourg still has some cobblestone streets that are difficult to walk on. Therefore we strongly advise that you book this tour only if you are in a good physical condition. This tour is certainly not adapted to persons who have walking difficulties and it is not wheelchair accessible.
Is the price per person or per group?
The pricing for our walking tours is per group of minimum 2 persons to maximum 15 persons.
What is the difference between your Strasbourg Guided Walking Tours & Free Tours?
In Strasbourg, the most important difference is that our guides can have you visit the inside of the Strasbourg Cathedral which guides of free tours cannot as most of them are not licensed tour guides.
What makes a guided walking tour in any town or city in the world so unique or outstanding is the personality, knowledge and qualifications of the tour guide. All our guides are local guides who either originate from the city where they guide in or have been living there for a number of years.
All possess the French Diploma that allows them to conduct tours in monuments, museums and historical city centers. This very specific diploma means that your guide is proficient in French History, Culture, Architecture & Art History and will be there to make detailed descriptions of the monuments and sights you will visit. All our guides also include great anecdotes to their lively comments making for very contemporary visits that stand out from the basic, very common ones offered by free tours!
Can we adapt the tour to fit our wishes?
Aboslutely, since this is a private tour we will customize the walking tour to your wishes. Let our team of travel professionals know what are your main points of interest and they will design the tour accordingly.
Is this Guided Walking Tour of Strasbourg only available in English?
No, our talented, in-house multi lingual guides will be happy to conduct the tour in French, Spanish, German or Italian.
