Pick Up in Caen or Surroundings Your guide will pick you up directly at your accommodation in Caen or the nearby area. After a brief overview of the day’s program, you step into a comfortable, air-conditioned minivan equipped with an onboard sound system for clear, engaging commentary. As this is a private tour, the itinerary is flexible and can be adapted to your interests, as long as timing allows. Your guide knows the region in depth and will help you focus on the most significant D-Day landmarks. Lunch recommendations or advance restaurant reservations can be provided depending on your chosen route.
Omaha Beach Your first major stop is the coastal battlefield of Omaha Beach, one of the two American landing sectors. Despite pre-invasion bombardments, many German defenses remained intact, and troops and amphibious vehicles were often landed too far from shore, creating chaos and very heavy casualties.
On the sands and along the bluffs, your guide explains why Omaha became the toughest beach of Operation Overlord, how its bunkers and obstacles were designed to repel any landing, and how the assault eventually succeeded. The scenes made famous in “Saving Private Ryan” gain new depth as you connect the film to the real ground and the stories of those who fought here.
Normandy American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer You then continue to the Normandy American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer, overlooking the eastern end of Omaha Beach. This beautifully maintained site holds the graves of thousands of American soldiers who fell during the Battle of Normandy. Here, the sweeping lawns, white crosses, memorials, reflecting pool and landscaped grounds create a powerful atmosphere of remembrance.
Large maps and displays help you understand the broader campaign, while viewpoints over the beach link the cemetery directly to the battlefield below. Time is provided to walk, reflect, take photos and absorb both the historical and emotional significance of the site.
Pointe du Hoc (Subject to Access Restrictions) Another key highlight of the day is Pointe du Hoc, the dramatic cliff-top position between Utah and Omaha Beaches where U.S. Rangers carried out one of the most daring assaults of D-Day. Among bomb craters, concrete casemates and ruined bunkers, your guide explains why this strongpoint was so vital and how the Rangers scaled the cliffs under fire to neutralize the guns.
⚠️ Please note: Due to road and construction works at Pointe du Hoc, access to the site may be limited in 2026 & 2027. In the event of closure, your visit will be replaced by another historically significant location such as Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, Angoville, or Carentan, ensuring the same depth of historical insight and experience.
Utah Beach You then head west to Utah Beach, the westernmost landing zone of D-Day. Here, the U.S. 4th Infantry Division came ashore in a landing that proved far more successful and less costly than at Omaha, thanks in part to airborne troops who disrupted German defenses inland. On the dunes and shoreline, your guide shows how tides, currents and strong pre-invasion bombardments shaped the battle, and how airborne and seaborne forces worked together to secure and expand the beachhead.
Sainte-Mère-Église Finally, you visit Sainte-Mère-Église, one of the first towns liberated by American forces on June 6, 1944 and a symbol of the U.S. airborne operations. In and around the church square, you retrace the nighttime drops of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions, the famous episode of the paratrooper caught on the steeple, and the fierce fighting in the streets. Your guide can focus on personal stories, the strategic importance of this crossroads, or how the town has chosen to remember its liberation, depending on your interests.

Our company uses only premium cars & minivans that are recent, comfortable and fully equipped including individual A/C, shaded windows and large leg space. -

This tour is adapted to everyone. Even though it is a long day, the tour does not involve a great amount of walking. Our guides will make the explanations on site and on / or near the beaches. This tour is not wheelchair accessible though. -
What can we expect on this D-Day private full day trip from Caen ?
This tour includes the possibility to visit a very large number of sites during a full day tour. Start with the Utah beach sector including Sainte Mère Eglish drop zone. During the booking process you will be able to include the entrance fees to the Airborne museum if you wish to visit. Then reach Pointe du Hoc and the Omaha beach landing sector. End your D-Day tour at the American Cemetery of Colleville Sur Mer. -
