Domme, La Roque-Gageac & Beynac: Half-Day Dordogne Villages & River Tour
Prepare for an unforgettable journey as you meet your English-speaking guide, a local expert of the Dordogne, at the designated meeting point. Look for the sign displaying the tour name and the recognizable Ophorus logo; for easy identification, all our guides wear nominative badges.
Once you’ve met your guide, they will provide a detailed overview of the day’s program and itinerary. Step into a comfortable, air-conditioned Mercedes minivan and get ready to explore the charming villages of the Dordogne and enjoy a peaceful boat ride. All vehicles are equipped with an onboard P.A. system so everyone can hear the guide’s commentary clearly, regardless of seating position.
Discover the Picturesque Village of Domme
Your first stop is the beautiful village of Domme, a bastide, or fortified medieval town, with a distinctive trapezoid city plan adapted to the surrounding terrain. Classified among the “Most Beautiful Villages of France,” Domme boasts a rich and turbulent history.
Learn how the village was used as a prison for Knights Templar in 1307 and later became a strategic stronghold during the Hundred Years’ War. As you stroll through its streets and viewpoints, enjoy sweeping vistas over the Dordogne Valley.
Experience Serenity on a Dordogne River Boat Ride
Next, drive to La Roque-Gageac, where you board an authentic gabarre for a tranquil cruise along the Dordogne River. These traditional flat-bottomed boats have been used for centuries to transport goods along the waterway.
As you float downstream, admire the imposing castles, clifftop villages, and lush riverbanks that line the valley. Your guide points out key landmarks, wildlife, and explains the history of the gabarres and trade that once flourished on the Dordogne.
Marvel at Beynac and Its Majestic Castle
Your final destination is Beynac, a captivating village nestled at the foot of a towering limestone cliff. Wander its steep lanes to reach the imposing château, one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in the region.
Built in the 12th century by the barons of Beynac, the castle played a crucial role in controlling the valley during the Middle Ages. From its ramparts, take in panoramic views over the Dordogne River and surrounding countryside, and learn about its defensive features, including double crenelated walls, moats, and barbican.
Return to Sarlat with Lasting Memories
As your visit to Beynac concludes, relax on the drive back to Sarlat, reflecting on the enchanting villages, scenic river cruise, and captivating history discovered throughout the tour. Reserve your spot now and join us on this half-day adventure through the picturesque landscapes and rich heritage of the Dordogne.

Srinivasan22, Oct 2025The trip to Domme, Beynac and the Dordogne boat ride was as described and we had had a lovely time. The icing on the cake was our guide Benoit who made all the difference. He was an excellent driver and gave us a descriptive insight of the history and the entire Sarlat region comprising of Domme and Beynac. We would still have enjoyed if not for the intermittent rain especially during the Dordogne boat ride. The commentary and explanation given during the boat ride was excellent and very informative.
5
Ann21, Oct 2025Excellent tour of the area. Local guide who loves history brought the stories of the places visited to life. The boat tour was sublime!
5
Benjamin03, Oct 2025A really good primer for the most beautiful part of the Dordogne of which the highlight was the boat trip from La Roque-Gageac. Benoit was a knowledgeable and laid-back guide with a dry sense of humour. It was all very relaxed. I would have paid a bit more to extend the time - in order to go inside Beynac Castle or perhaps the grotto at Domme
5
Jelena16, Sep 2025Lena is an excellent, very knowleadgeable and professional guide, who provides just i enough amount of relevant information, yet gives you some private time and space. The van is very comfortable and the overall experience was excellent because in 4 hours you get to see and feel the core of the Perigord Noir, its beauties and some of the most beautiful villages in the whole of France. We highly recommend this tour and Lena!
5
Henri 07, Aug 2025Our guide, Benoit, was very professional and friendly. He planned a very reasonable itinerary and provided us with valuable information about local food, agriculture, and history. He also took traffic into consideration and started our tour in Domme, avoiding the market day traffic. I would definitely recommend this tour to my friends. Thank you very much.
5
Daniella30, Jun 2025The tour was good and the guide, Benoit, was excellent. We were picked up on time in a comfortable van. The day was very hot so we appreciated the air conditioning in the van! The two towns are beautiful and quite walkable. In each town we were given an overview by the guide and given about half an hour to walk around. The boat ride allowed people to view the river landscape and the village and castle from the water. We would have liked to have visited the inside of the castle at Beynac but there wasn't time. Overall, it's a good tour to acquaint one with the 2 villages and the Dordogne River.
5
Linda L27, May 2025Wonderful small group tour with Lena as our guide. We went to 3 beautiful Dordogne villages and the views were amazing. A boat ride was included with commentary and the guide on the boat was excellent. So many pictures were taken as there was so much to see. My favorite was La Roque Gageac as the gigantic rock formation was a stunning backdrop for the river. Fantastic day thanks to Lena.

Shannon K.02, Oct 2024I really loved our tour guide Anne. She was exceptional knowing so much about ancient history and even current events of the area. Such a personable lady she made the tour very real and not the least bit dull.
5
Paul F.27, Sep 2024All I can say is that the tour turned out to be above my entire expectations. Also, Ann went out of her way to make sure we will not be disappointed. The same applies to the tour I took yesterday to Rocamadour. Look forward to my next tour with Ann.
5
Ceajay Beer30, May 2024Great tour around some old french towns and a boat ride. Our guide, Anne, was fantastic. Very friendly and informative. She seems passionate about the local area. The recorded information on the boat was also very interesting. Well worth the price for everything you see.

Andrea Woolhouse25, May 2024We did the half day tour of Dordogne villages with Benoit as our guide and it was wonderful. The villages and gabarre ride are a must and Benoit was friendly, very knowledgeable and a great driver. Highly recommended
5
Cydney Crampton15, May 2024Took a strip with Anne to the prehistoric sites and caves. She was outstanding and spoke excellent English. She gave us restaurant recommendations for Sarlat, as well. Superb driver, as well. Benoit took us to the scenic villages of the Dordogne and he was equally superb in the same respects. Thank you for providing such excellent service and great education.
5
Joe25, Apr 2024Joe and I had an amazing time in Bordeaux and Dordogne. Luigi in Bordeaux for the wine tours and Benoit in Dordogne were both excellent tour guides and made our days exceptional. Anne, who drove us from Bordeaux to Sarlat was also delightful. Everything that was supposed to happen on the trip did indeed happen and our entire trip went very smoothly. Thank you so much for making this trip a total delight. We were probably lucky, as the weather had turned nice the day we arrived in Bordeaux. My best, seena"

5
N/A22, Oct 2023Communication was very good, with helpful information. Our guide was very punctual and proceeded to give us a comprehensive overview of the area’s history and prehistory with humor and relevant anecdotes. We were very comfortable with all aspects of this road tour. The river ride was less exciting for non-French speakers, but our headphones with taped commentary was satisfactory.
5
Bruce Leidenberger21, Oct 2023Anne, your knowledge of the area and its history were amazing and you were such a delight to be with on all three tours.
I will highly recommend specifically your tours to anyone traveling to Sarlat and looking to get a good basic knowledge of the area and its history.

Beverly24, Sep 2023Excellent trip with a super guide, visiting 3 beautiful villages and a 50 minute boat tour. Timings were good, and we had enough time in each place, with extra information from our guide who was very knowledgeable. Good shoes such as trainers are needed as there are steps and some steep paths, so flip flops not a good idea. I would definitely recommend this trip.
5
Michael22, Sep 2023Anne gave us a lovely introduction to the villages in the area and their history. Super viewpoints across the river valley and an enjoyable boat trip on the Dordogne, where we learnt about historic trade on the river. Everyone in our group was friendly.
Beynac is quite a steep descent by foot from the top. Less mobile people might want to travel back down in the vehicle.
5
Gunilla22, Sep 2023Our guide Ann was fantastic, funny and informative. The scenaries around the river Dordogne was very beautiful.
5
Carolyn21, Sep 2023The tour provides a great introduction to some of the beautiful medieval villages of the Dordogne valley, particularly for those who do not have a car to get around. The cruise down the Dordogne River on a traditional Gabarre is also a highlight and the best vantage point to get photos of the villages & castles. The tours are with small, manageable groups, and the van comfortable and air conditioned. I was fortunate to have Anne on all three tours I did in the region with Ophorus. She was fantastic - knowledgeable, good fun, accommodated everyone’s needs which made the tour special for me! Highly recommend especially if you don’t have a car.
The tour company do such an amazing job that I think they should offer full day village tours so that travellers can spend more time in each of the villages and/or see more of the villages (especially for travellers who don’t have a car). Thank you Ophorus…I had a wonderful experience!
5
VB21, Sep 2023Doing the half day tour if this beautiful area in a small group with English commentary was
perfect. Anna was a fantastic guide with a great sense of humour.

SNG5618, Sep 2023Lovely trip through 3 typical villages, each with something unique to it. Ann was a great guide and driver. My main issue had to do with the boat ride. It was all in French and while we were given Audio guides, what we heard was completely different and not at all current compared to what the tour guide was saying. I understand enough French to know the difference and the experience was very disappointing.

He made the tours fun and was very witty. And he was very accommodating to our needs. We felt lucky to get him. Highly recommend.

Jus23, Jul 2023Benoit is fantastic and incredibly knowledgeable, able to tailor the experience to your level of knowledge and interests. While you could drive to most of the same locations yourself and even book the boat tour yourself, Benoit made it easy, always having priority parking, picking us up after the downhill walks rather than slogging back up, and walking with us while providing excellent background and information.

She was extremely helpful, friendly, very knowledgeable guide!
She answered all our questions and even gave us some tips for our next trips in the area. She is also an excellent driver!
This trip was very pleasant, it covered 2 major historical sights and a boat ride on Dordogne river.
I would recommend this trip ( and Ann ) to everyone!

Karen from California04, Apr 2023Our half day trip with Maarten to the Dordogne Villages of Beynac, La-Roque-Gageac and Domme was the best way we could have started our trip. We only had three days in the region and to begin with Maarten really gave us the perspective we needed to appreciate all that the region has to offer. Maarten clearly loves sharing his extensive knowledge with fellow travelers. He is warm and engaging and challenges you to imagine what life was like in the many layers of centuries we discussed and why it is important to understand why changes over time happened the way that they did. We really enjoyed the river ride on the gabarre too. Such a beautiful way to see La-Roque-Gageac from below. So impressive. I highly recommend this tour with Maarten! I hope to return again one day. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes!
5
Benedicte Milward26, Oct 2022What a great afternoon. Martin was a wonderful guide. Very reliable on the history of the places we visited, his driving was perfect. He even planned our tour to our needs, skipping a place we already saw to bécane to spend more time elsewhere. I highly recommend this tour.
5
N/A21, Oct 2022We had a small group of 4 with our guide Benoit. Benoit provided good information about the area and he was very easy to understand. The amount of time spent in each of the 3 towns was just enough to get a feel for each small town. The river ride from La Roque-Gageac was pleasant, even though we had to take a different route due to too shallow water. I would definitely recommend this tour if you don't have a car in the Dordogne.
5
Ondra W.21, Sep 2022My trip to three villages of the Dordogne was very good indeed. Maarten was extremely well organised and very good at holding our group of six
together, so everything seemed to go like clockwork.
The commentary was very interesting as Maarten has the ability to liven up
history and bring places alive with stories and humour.
He was at all times warmly relational and took care to give clear
instructions when necessary. He drives safely and very skilfully in
difficult situations.
All round it was an excellent afternoon of generous sightseeing and
learning.

Karen B27, Sep 2019Half Day Tour of Dordogne--Great!
Our guide used a microphone so it was very easy to hear him. The tour was all in English. He took the approach that these were three different styles of medieval villages which made it very interesting. Each village was unique and he gave us a little time to wander in each one. The trip also included an hour boat ride on the Dordogne river which was wonderful, so don't book that as a separate tour. It was a very full afternoon but fascinating to see the differences in the three villages. Very good tour.

I joined this tour in Mid-June, 2019. It was a wonderful tour -- I was able to visit beautiful villages, and the guide has excellent skill of English. Picturesque scenery is everywhere in this area, but few public transportation is available. So, a small group tour like this is very helpful.
And thank you again Ms. F, I was very lucky because I had such a friendly guide like you!
