Rocamadour: Half-Day Guided Tour from Sarlat

Immerse yourself in the captivating beauty of one of France's most stunning villages, nestled in the Quercy region. Built dramatically against a cliff, Rocamadour is an architectural marvel that reflects the hierarchical structure of the French feudal system, with distinct areas for the chivalry, the clergy, and the peasants.

The lower section of the village was traditionally home to peasants’ houses, the middle level is dominated by the sanctuary where the clergy resided, and at the top of the cliff stands the castle, residence of the local lord representing the chivalry.

Meet Your Expert English-Speaking Guide

Your half-day Rocamadour adventure begins as you meet your English-speaking local guide, an expert on the Dordogne and Quercy region. After a brief overview of the itinerary and program, step into a spacious, comfortable, air-conditioned Mercedes minivan and let your exploration begin.

Rocamadour: A Picture-Perfect Pilgrimage Site

Travel through the countryside to Rocamadour, a village famous for its pilgrimage sites and fortress. Perched in a gorge above a tributary of the River Dordogne, Rocamadour takes its name from the association of St. Amadour, whose relics were discovered in the sanctuary in 1166, and the Occitan word for rock, “roca.”

Wander through the medieval streets with your guide until you reach the steps leading to the heart of the village. As you ascend the Great Staircase—around 216 steps—imagine the medieval pilgrims who climbed it on their knees as an act of devotion.

Visit the Monastic Buildings and Sanctuary

Upon arrival at the sanctuary, your guide introduces you to its key sites and legends. Look for the legendary sword of Roland, Durandal, embedded in the cliff. According to tradition, Roland, Charlemagne’s nephew, threw the sword from the battlefield so it could never be used again.

Explore the Notre Dame Chapel, part of a remarkable 13th-century complex. Hear the story of the Black Madonna statue, carved from walnut wood in the 12th century, and admire the ship models hanging from the ceiling, offered by sailors saved from shipwrecks after invoking her protection. Listen for the miraculous bell said to ring once for each ship saved, and admire 12th-century frescoes depicting the Annunciation and Visitation opposite the chapel.

Free Time and Panoramic Views

After your guided visit of the sanctuary, enjoy free time to explore Rocamadour at your own pace. If you exit at the same level, you can walk up to the castle above the village. While the castle interior is not open to visitors, you can stroll along the ramparts and take in panoramic views over the Alzou canyon and the surrounding landscape.

Return with Lasting Memories

Unforgettable memories await you in Rocamadour, a village steeped in history, legend, and spirituality. Join us on this half-day tour and immerse yourself in the beauty of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Reserve your spot now and embark on an extraordinary journey through time.

Kathryn 16, Sep 2025 Rocamadour is a very special place. Our guide Anne was spectacular. It was an amazing 4 hours to spend with her learning about the area, the site and just general information vis-a-vis France and Perigord.

Elina V 02, Jul 2025 This was a fabulous tour! Lena was the guide and it was a very small group. The tour allows you enough time to enjoy the town.. Lena took us around but then gave us some free time. I also was with Lena the prior day for the 3 villages and enjoyed that with her also. She was a terrific guide. Nice manner about her and very knowledgeable.

benedicte milward 19, Oct 2022 What a great afternoon. Martin was a wonderful guide. Very reliable on the history of the places we visited, his driving was perfect. He even planned our tour to our needs, skipping a place we already saw to bécane to spend more time elsewhere. I highly recommend this tour.

Quick answers

  • What are the top attractions to visit while in Rocamadour?

First of all, you will be with your own guide that will introduce you to this marvellous village. During your guided walking tour, discover the sanctuary where you will visit the different chapels, admire the Black Virgin and breath taking views. You will then have time for personal discovery & lunch. This free time will allow you to stroll the medieval streets, shop for local souvenirs or have a relaxed coffee break.
  • How strenuous is this tour?

Rocamadour is a medieval village. This implies that there are cobblestone streets that can be difficult to walk on. Also, the sanctuary is located in the middle part of the village and to reach it implies that you will need to climb stairs. However, there is a possibility of taking an elevator but this will be at your own expense.
  • How many steps will we have to climb in Rocamadour?

Once you have visited the village, you will arrive in front of the Great Staircase. This is the main pilgramage way to arrive at the sanctuary. There are about 216 stairs to climb so this can be challanging for some persons. Howere, there is an option to take an elevator for those that have walking issues or that feel that the climb will be too strenuous. The return price for the elevator is under 4€ at time of writing (11/2020).
