[name] => Petite France & Cathedral: Private Walking Tour of Strasbourg
[durationMinutes] => 120
[minimumNoticeMinutes] => 41760
[shortDescription] => Explore the History & Beauty of Strasbourg with an Expert local licensed Guide on this private guided walking tour of Strasbourg. Avoid the free walking tours of Strasbourg and visit this city with an official guide including the Cathedral!
[description] =>
Follow a certified tour guide in the Grande Ile, a Unesco World Heritage site, around the old pedestrian areas, the Cathedral and the Petite France neighborhood. The tour includes major landmarks such as Maison Kammerzell, Gutenberg square, St. Thomas church, the former tanners’ houses, the Covered Bridge and many more.

Pick up by your guide at your centrally located Hotel

For this private walking tour of the beautiful city of Strasbourg, your guide will come and pick you up at your hotel or accommodation in central Strasbourg. If you are not based in Strasbourg and are coming from outside, we will suggest a convenient meeting point where to meet your guide.

The Cathedral

Begin your private 2-hour walk in Strasbourg.The old city centers around its Gothic cathedral, Our Lady of Strasbourg, built of red sandstone and described by Victor Hugo as a “gigantic and delicate marvel”! Follow your expert guide for the Cathedral* visit including the marvelous façade that provides one of the finest picture books of the Middle Ages that you will ever see.

The hundreds of sculptures which almost seem to leap out at you from the wall make great use of light and shadow effects. Another major attraction that your guide will comment on are the stained-glass windows dating from the 12th and 14th centuries and that form a particularly enchanting sight along with the rose window.

Finally, the highlight of the visit to the Cathedral of Notre Dame is the amazing Renaissance astronomical clock. Built in 1843 it features an orrery, a rotating display of the sun and moon, a planetary calendar, and even a mechanical rooster. Each day at around 12:30, the bird crows and a conga line of apostles issues forth from the clockworks, led by a little Christ.

* Please note that the audio headset rental that is compulsory to visit the Cathedral is included in the price.

The Old Town & La Petite France district

After the visit of the Cathedral, reach the Petite France district. Historically, this was the poor section of the city occupied by mills and tanneries, both of which depended on the river and its downward flowing branches to support their work.

Today, the neighborhood is one of the most charming of Strasbourg with its colorful 16th and 17th century half-timbered houses such as the ‘Maison des Tanneurs’ that your guide will certainly point out.

Your private guided tour in this charming area will lead you to our final stop: a series of fortified bridges and their three towers. This succession of three bridges linking arms with the Ill River is dominated by three 14th century towers, remains of the ancient medieval ramparts, which totalized 90 towers. The bridges themselves were once capped by a wooden roof.

Of course Strasbourg offers so much more including the visit of the German district, the visit of the European Parliament or the different Museums located in the Palais Rohan. Since this is a private tour don't hesitate to reach out to our team of travel advisors if there is a highlight of Strasbourg that you would like to include on this tour.

After your tour, why not join one of our half day or full day trips from Strasbourg to the most important landmarks of Alsace along the wine route?

[description] =>
Learn the History of the Marian Apparitions

Following the reports that Our Lady of Lourdes had appeared to Bernadette Soubirous on a total of eighteen occasions in 1858, Lourdes has developed into a major place of Roman Catholic pilgrimage and of miraculous healing. The 150th Jubilee of the first apparition took place on 11 February 2008 with an outdoor mass attended by more than ten thousand pilgrims.

Today, around six million people visit Lourdes each year. Due to the consistent stream of pilgrims and tourists, Lourdes has become the second most important center of tourism in France, following Paris. It is now the third most important international Catholic pilgrimage site.

Enjoy a walking tour of the Sanctuary of Lourdes with your guide. You’ll learn about the history of the Marian apparitions and visit the mains shrines of the Sanctuary, as well as other locations that played an important role in Lourdes’ history. Visits include the Crypte, the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, the Basilica of the Rosary and the impressive underground Basilica Saint Pius X.

Meet your English speaking Licensed Tour Guide

Meet your English speaking local guide at a dedicated meeting point in Lourdes. By default we will set the meeting point in front of the Lourdes Tourism Office, but if you wish we can agree to another meeting point if that suits you better. Then you will have different options concerning your walking tour. You can either make your way to the Sanctuary where your guide will take you to the most important sites. Or, if you are interested in the life of Bernadette, there is also an option to follow a tour that will take you to the place where the young girl lived in Lourdes. At the beginning of your walking tour, don't hesitate to let your guide know which options you would be interested in.

Visit the Sanctuary

Begin your 2-hour guided walking tour with the visit of the Sanctuaries of Lourdes. The ensemble is the largest pilgrimage site of the town. Here, all the major churches are located as well as the grotto where the apparitions of the Virgin Mary took place. Visits include the Crypte, the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, the Basilica of the Rosary and the impressive underground Basilica Saint Pius X.

Stop at the Grotto

Walk towards the Grotto of the apparitions and enter beneath the rock. See the spring and the famous statue of Our Lady of Lourdes, an unforgettable experience. The Grotto is the site of the extraordinary events which took place in 1858. The niche where the statue is placed marks the place where the Virgin Mary most often stood. Iit is like a window that opens onto the kingdom of God.

The Grotto is a place of prayer, hope, peace, respect, unity and silence. When passing through the Grotto or standing in front of it, each person has his or her own personal understanding of what it means. There, it is possible to fill bottles of the water of Lourdes and take time to meditate near the Grotto.

On the footsteps of Bernadette, visit the Boly Mill

During this walking tour in town, visit the house of Bernadette, the Boly Mill and then reach the ‘Cachot’, the small room where the family lived in the most difficult times. Bernadette Soubirous was born in this millhouse on the 7th of January of 1844. She lived in the water-mill with her parents for ten years. At that time, it was part of the numerous water-mills located on the edges of the river called “the Lapacca” and flowing into the river Gave de Pau. Inside you will discover the bedroom where Bernadette was born, the kitchen and the ancient water-mill with its grindstones. After 10 years of a happy life in the Mill, a set of tragic events will force the family to leave the Mill, not able to pay the rent anymore.

Visit the Cachot

By 1857, the Soubirous family fell on hard times and were obliged to move from the Boly Mill to what was a former prison, 'Le Cachot' (the cell). This small 16 square meters room (170 square feet) became the home of the family that was composed of the parents, Bernadette, her sister and her two brothers. It is at this time that the apparitions took place the first of which takes place on February 11, 1858.

[durationMinutes] => 120
[minimumNoticeMinutes] => 4320
[shortDescription] => Visit the Charming small town of Beaune with an Expert, licensed Guide in a fun & informative way. Highlights of the tour include Notre Dame Basilica, the Great Tower and all major highlights of the town of Beaune.
[description] =>
Follow a private guided walking tour with a licensed guide, expert of the town of Beaune. Today, we will come and pick you up at your hotel or accommodation in Beaune. If you are traveling from outside the city, we will pre-program a centrally located meeting point.

Meet your English speaking licensed guide who is accredited to conduct guided tours in historical towns, museums and monuments and thanks to the fascinating stories and local anecdotes you will discover Beaune in a fun & informative way.

Then, begin your 2-hour guided walking tour in Beaune. Discover how the city was built from the middle ages to the present day and admire the heritage which reminds us of the great Beaune Hours including the Notre Dame Collegiate Church and passing by the ramparts of the city.

A bit of History

The origin of the town of Beaune can be dated back to the 1st century BP when the Romans decided to build a fortification that lied at the crossroads between two of their most important ways. One linked the town of Lyon to Trier (Germany) and the other linked the town of Besançon to Autun. The town became prosperous in the 12th century thanks to the wine trade and its urban area expands outside the castle walls, erecting remparts that can be still seen today.

The town was at the time the Capital of the Duchy of Burgundy and the first Burgundian Parliament met at Beaune in 1227. During the middle ages, the town then organized itself around three major locations: the market square (that is today Place de la Halle), the Collegiate Church of Notre Dame (the old historical town center) and Place Carnot where the Parish Church used to stand.

The streets of Beaune have kept a number of houses and buildings that date back to those days, from Romanesque houses to 18th century private mansions. The town's past is also closely linked with religious life. Other than the Romanesque Clunisien style Collegiate Church of Notre Dame that dates back to the 12th & 13th century, a number of Abbeys and Convents still occupy a large proportion of the urban space.

Today, most of the buildings belong to wine merchants who have found an ideal location to store their wines. The Hospitaliers religious order also left their print in the town of Beaune with the most famous construction being the Hôtel-Dieu, built in a Franco-flemish style, and that dates back to the 15th century. There is a second Hôtel-Dieu named Hospice de la Charité that is a good example of 17th century architecture.

Hotel Dieu des Hospices de Beaune

The Hôtel-Dieu was a medieval hospital that featured vast halls for beds for the sick. Founded in 1443, the Hôtel-Dieu in Beaune is a two-storied construction that occupies three sides of a courtyard. In one of its wards is a Museum dedicated to Rogier Van der Weyden's great Altarpiece - The Last Judgement that was commissioned by Nicolas Rolin, the last chancellor of the Burgundian Dukes and the hospital's builder.

The Hospital was built to help the persons who had suffered from famine and poverty after the Hundred Years War. As you visit, discover the kitchen, the pharmacy and the vast hall with its wooden beds and red curtains that maintain some kind of privacy. The Hospices is also famous for the wine auction it organizes each year with wine produced from 53 hectares of vineyards that were donated to the hospital through the centuries. This Charity Sale is held every year in November.

Basilique Notre Dame

Beaune, located on the way to Jerusalem, was a popular stop for all the pilgrims wanting to make their way towards the Holy Land. Because the number of pilgrims that pass through the town in the 12th century is considerable, the Dukes of Burgundy decided to build a larger Church than the existing one, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The beginning of the construction of Notre Dame Collegiate Church dates back to the second half of the 12th century. The architectural style of the Basilica was inspired by that of Cluny. The largest part of the Basilica is in the Romanesque style.

This sanctuary has kept rich furniture ranging from the Romanesque period to the 17th century. There are also important remains of 15th century wall paintings that you will discover during your visit. Notre-Dame de Beaune is known worldwide for its tapestries depicting Virgin Mary’s life; they are presented in the Basilica’s Choir.

This exceptional collection dates from the 16th century. The major events in Mary’s life are evoked in successive scenes. This set of tapestries was restored by the Hôtel-Dieu de Beaune’s nuns in 1852.

Grosse Tour

Beaune is a fortified town located in the heart of the prestigious Burgundy wine region. One of the four towers built in the early 16th century, it is decorated on the boulevard side with the coat of arms of the governor of Burgundy, La Trémouille. It played a role in monitoring the plain by watching the Route de Verdun, the nearby Saone forming the frontier between the French kingdom and the Holy Roman Empire until 1678.

Thus the guard saw the arrival in 1569 of the 40,000 Germans answering Condé's call, and then in 1636 the army led by Gallas that ravaged, pillaged and set fire to the faubourgs. Purchased in 1891 by the Maison Calvet from Bordeaux, it was used by this wine merchant as a prestigious tasting room before being acquired by the municipality. Its roof is laid out as a pleasure garden.

Wine tasting Burgundy Wine in Beaune

Beaune is considered to be the Capital of Burgundy wines. If you would like to taste some wines as part of this guided walking tour, it is possible for us to organize a wine tasting session in one of the numerous wine cellars that are located within the town of Beaune. During a commented session, taste some of the most typical local red and whites wines that have made Burgundy such a famous wine region of France.

Then begin to make your way towards the historical city center of Bordeaux.

The Golden Triangle

Under the name of Golden Triangle lies a district of Bordeaux that englobes Cours Georges-Clemenceau, Cours de l'Intendance and the Allées de Tourny. These three very large streets form a Triangle of which each tip ends with a square: Gambetta, Comedie and Tourny. Historically, this is where all the most luxurious shops and financial institutions were located. In the 18th century, the wealthiest persons of Bordeaux started building Private Mansions, vaste and luxurious city houses, built for a single family and its servants.

Place de la Comédie

This impressive square is located between the Grand Theater of Bordeaux and the houses that face it to the west. The impressive portico composed of 12 Corinthian columns of the Grand Theater, designed by architect Victor Louis, dominate the whole composition of the square. The Theatre was inaugurated in 1780 and originally the ground sloped up so that carriages could drive inside the colonnade. In 1899 the building is classified as a Historical Monument. Today, the Theater is home to the National Opera of Bordeaux.

The Grand Theatre

The inauguration of the Grand Theatre of Bordeaux took place on April 7, 1780. It took Victor Louis more than 7 years to achieve the construction commissioned by the Governor of Guyenne, Louis Armand du Plessis, Duke of Richelieu. Built in a Neoclassical style, the Grand Theatre impresses with its main façade composed of a portico of 12 Corinthian columns above which stand 12 statues - nine muses and 3 goddesses of Classical Mythology.

Place de la Bourse

The Royal Square, today Place de la Bourse, is considered to be the most elegant façade located on the quays of Bordeaux. Initially, the architectural program completed the installation of a statue of Louis XV that was inaugurated on the 19th of August 1743. Construction of the square took more than 25 years and the hard work of two 'Intendants' (Civil Officers) and three architects. The architectural style is directly modeled on the works of Mansart for Versailles. Eventually, the statue of Louis XV was taken off its basement in 1792 and replaced by the fountain of the Three Graces.

The Rohan Palace

The Palace was built between 1171 and 1784 by architect Bonfin under the patronage of Ferdinand Maximilien Mériadec de Rohan. The Rohan Palace, after being the siege of the Archbishop of the revolutionary court and an imperial Palace, is today the Town Hall of Bordeaux since 1835. Inside, behind its Louis XVI style facade, is one of the most beautiful staircases of France a masterpiece of stereotomy. The Rohan Palace faces the Saint Andrew Cathedral and Pey Berland tower.

If you are interested in other visits of Bordeaux, don't hesitate to browse our other walking tours that begin with Place des Quinconces and include a visit of the quartier des Chartrons district linked to the wine growing history of Bordeaux and that we mention on our wine tours.

[shortDescription] => Visit the Essential Sites of Colmar on this small group private Guided Walking Tour with a licensed guide knowledgeable in Colmar's History & Culture. Discover the Old Town, Petite Venise, the Koifhus, the Pfister House and many more.
[description] =>
Described by Frommer’s as ‘one of the most attractive towns in Alsace’, Colmar is situated in east-central France, in a border region that was once disputed between France and Germany. The city is renowned for its well preserved old town, its numerous architectural landmarks and its museums, among which is the Unterlinden Museum with the Isenheim Altarpiece. Colmar is also one of the gateways to the Alsace Wine Route.

Colmar the capital of the Haut Rhin offers a great deal of unique attractions and activities. The small town of Colmar is one of the most exquisite of France with its historic center, grand rue, quai de la poissonnerie, st martin's church, medieval half timbered houses such as the “maison des tetes” and small winding canals. The town also houses one of the most impressive 16th century painting – the Issenheim Altarpiece - that is located in the Unterlinden Museum.

Visit Colmar with a licensed tour guide

Follow a 2 hour guided walking tour with an Expert English speaking licensed guide to discover all the main highlights this beautiful city has to offer. Departing from your hotel or the local Colmar Tourist Office and reach the historical center.

Discover the rich heritage of this charming small town. Your tour will certainly lead you to the “Maison des Tetes”, an outstanding German Renaissance building and to the Little Venice neighborhood where gorgeous traditional half timbered houses are lined along the Lauch River.

Other significant landmarks include:

The Koifhus: This is the Old customs building strategically located at the crossroads of the Grand'Rue and the rue des Marchands. The building dates back to the early 15th century and was used as the meeting place of the deputies of the Décapole which was the federation of the 10 imperial cities of Alsace.

The Pfister House: This is the first example of Renaissance architecture in Colmar. From the outside the building still retains some medieval features but its storey corner oriel, its galleries, its octagonal turret and its mural paintings are perfect examples of the changes that were taking place in those days. The house is named after the family who restored it in the last quarter of the 19th century.

Saint Martin church: The construction of the Church lasted for more than 100 years from 1235 to 1365 and is a perfect example of local Gothic architecture. For a number of years the Church was considered by the locals as their Münster or Cathedral. In fact, the Church was a Cathedral for only about 10 years.

Note: We can include the visit and guided tour of the Unterlinden Museum that houses world famous Isenheim Altarpiece. If you would like to include the visit of the museum you must make that particular request at time of booking. Entrance tickets will be available during the booking process.

Begin your walking tour at La Rotonde an important location created between 1840 and 1860 and where you will admire one of the many fountains that can be found in Aix en Provence. Roughly 12 meters high, the fountain is composed of 2 bassins ornated with Lions, Dolphins, Swans and Children. The fountain is linked with the Canal of Provence.

Continue your tour towards the Cours Mirabeau and the Mazarin quarter. This unique neighborhood built on a grid plan is dotted with luxurious buildings that were erected to welcome members of the local parliament and bourgeois of the 17th century.

A number of beautiful private mansions can be seen here including Hotel de Gallifet and Hotel de Caumont built in 1715 that has become a renowned Art Center. From there, you will arrive Place de Prêcheurs where the Court of Justice of Aix en Provence is located. Here, your guide might show you Église de la Madeleine where Paul Cézanne was baptized in 1839.

Moving on, arrive on the square of the Town Hall that has been located here since the 15th century but rebuilt during the 17th century. The square is also home to a fountain that was erected in 1755 as well a Grain Exchange that was built in 1754.

Finally, reach the Old Aix Museum located in the prestigious Etienne de Saint Jean Private Mansion and that has been the museum of history of the town since 1932. The tour will end as you admire the ancient Palace of the Archbishops of Aix en Provence and the Saint Sauveur Cathedral. This area was all about ecclesiastical and political power during the 17th and 18th century. The Saint Sauveur Cathedral dates back to the 5th century and was remodeled throughout the centuries. The Cathedral was classified as a historical monument in 1875.

[name] => Marseille Guided Walking Tour Private
[durationMinutes] => 120
[minimumNoticeMinutes] => 41760
[shortDescription] => A private Marseille Guided Walking Tour with a Certified Guide including all the major landmarks of the city. Follow your guide on a 2-hour tour to visit Le Panier district, The Old Port, the Palais Longchamp & the Abbey of St Victor.
[description] =>
Discover the best of Marseille with a private guide. This walking guided tour will allow you to discover one of the oldest districts of the Phocean City. You will have the opportunity to walk along the Old Port, where you will gain a better understanding of why Marseille was a strategic place for the Greeks to build a city. You will see the Old Charity, a former hospital for the poorest people.

You will walk in front of the Cathedral La Major, which will surprise you with its uncommon Byzantine architecture designed by Esperandieu. Let’s not forget the MUCEM, which contrasts with the old architecture of the rest of the district. The Musée des Civilisations d’Europe et de Méditerranée offers numerous permanent or temporary exhibitions (entrance tickets are not included). Admire both Fort St Jean and Fort St Nicolas which stood proudly at the entrance of the Old Port.

Meet your English speaking licensed tour guide

Your English speaking local guide will come and pick you up at your centrally located hotel or accommodation in central Marseille. If you are coming from out of town, it will be possible for us to organize a dedicated meeting point in Marseille such as in front of the Marseille tourism office.

The Old Port

The Vieux Port represents the birthplace of Marseilles. This is where the city began as a Greek port around 600 BC. Surrounded by serene blue waters, the Old Port is located in the west of Marseille near the Canebière boulevard.

The Old port of Marseille was completely renovated in 2013 and the district is without a doubt the heart of the City. The whole area became semi-pedestrianised as part of a big redevelopment project designed by the British architect Norman Foster to open up the space for bars and restaurants, vendors and public events.

This is where all the major events of Marseille take place and where the crowds meet when they celebrate their football team’s achievements. In the morning, one should not miss the very lively fish market.

The Panier District

Your guided tour continues in the Panier district, which is another area that one should not miss when visiting Marseille. This popular neighborhood is topped by the Old Charity and is composed of small but steep streets, crossed by multiple stairways and lined with elevated buildings and their colorful façades. Here, spend time to stroll through the narrow streets and reach Moulin’s square where numerous art galleries, restaurants, cafés and designer boutiques have settled.

The 'Vieille Charité' hospital

In accordance with the royal policy of “the great confinement of the poor”, in 1640 the City Council decided to “confine Marseille’s native poor to a clean and specific place.” In 1670, a charity within the Magistrate Council commissioned Pierre Puget, the Marseille-born king’s architect, to build a General Hospital to accommodate beggars and the poor. The first stone was laid in 1671 of what would be one of Pierre Puget’s most beautiful architectural designs.

The hospital was completed in 1749 with four wings of buildings enclosed on the outside and opened by a 3 floor corridor on an internal rectangular courtyard to access the vast communal work and residential spaces separating men and women. The chapel built in the centre of the courtyard between 1679 and 1707 is a stunning architectural piece with an ovoid dome, the epitome of Italian baroque. The current façade wasn’t built until 1863 and echoes the Charité’s mission.

The Mucem Museum

Built on the historical site of the Fort St-Jean, Marseille’s most recent cultural offering bridges the gap between the city and the sea. The Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations (MuCEM) opened its doors in June 2013 while Marseille was European Capital of Culture.

The building was designed by architect Rudy Riciotti and it was the first museum entirely dedicated to Mediterranean culture, which has played such a major role in European and in African history. Resolutely contemporary, the architecture combines raw materials and shapes that play with the light and shadow of the south of France. It is listed among the world’s 50 most visited museums.

The Cantini Museum

This museum visit can be a great option if you would like to enhance your guided walking tour of Marseille. Art lovers will appreciate the superb collection of modern and contemporary art displayed within a 17th-century hôtel particulier (mansion). The local art collector Jules Cantini bought this elegant house in 1888, and he bequeathed it to the city of Marseilles in 1916.

The Musée Cantini boasts one of the country's most extensive assortments of modern art created between 1900 and 1960. Highlights of the collection include works by Raoul Dufy, Wassily Kandinsky, Max Ernst, Joan Miró, and Pablo Picasso.

Your local guide is flexible, so if you wish to see some other highlights of the City such as the Corniche or the Football stadium then you will need to inform your guide who will adapt the tour to your requirements as long as the timing is not an issue. If you would like to visit Notre Dame de la Garde, please let us know as we will need to adapt your itinerary and program accordingly.

On your way to your first stop, you will have the pleasure to taste a cannelé, Bordeaux's most famous cake. In the 16th century, to filter the wine, egg white was used by the winemakers to obtain a wine with less particles.

The egg yolk, not needed for this process, was given to the nuns of the Annonciades Convent who would also obtain wheat and rhum on the docks of Bordeaux. With these ingrediants, they created cakes that were given to the poor or needy. The cakes did not look like the one's you will taste on your food tour. It wasn't until the early 1900's that the cake will take this typical shape that we know today, completely redesigned by a Bordeaux Pastry Chef.

Basque Country Cured Meats & Delicacies

Your goumet tour will include Basque specialties. Located just a mear 2 hours south of Bordeaux, the Basque country is home to many delicacies including its cured meats. In this local shop popular with locals you will taste products that respect tradition, seasons, nature one of the most famous being the Kintoa PDO ham & meats. The ham is cured for 16 to 18 months and produces a dark red marbled meat.

The Basque country is also famous for being one of the most important chocolate destination in France. The first traces of hot chocolate served in France is mentioned in the town of Bayonne where the cocoa first arrived in the 17th century. Since 1895, the Pariès Family excels in Chocolate making and is today recognized as one of the most famous chocolate makers of France. The most famous products of this Chocolate Maker include the Mouchou and the Kanouga which you can taste on your tour today depending on the itinerary you plan with your guide.

The Dunes Blanches

Taste one of the most delicious deserts that can be found in Bordeaux, the Dunes Blanches. Dune Blanche is a delicious little crispy chou bun topped with a cream as light as a cloud. This lovingly garnished chou bun is a concentrate of happiness. Legend has it that the son of a famous baker of Cap Ferret, coming home after a long night out, mixes a Chouquette (sugar puffs) with a very light cream, secret of the family. The Dunes Blanches were born!

Food & Wine Pairing

It would be impossible to follow a Bordeaux Gourmet Tour without including local Bordeaux wines and what pairs the best with it: cheese or chocolate. Depending on the time of the day and your desires, the tasting will be salty or sweet. The goal here, is to have you experience simple pairings that you will be able to reproduce at home. On this stop it will be all about food & wine pairing !

[shortDescription] => Get the Expert Take on Wonderful Carcassonne
[description] =>
Get the expert take on wonderful Carcassonne

Carcassonne is located in the Occitanie region of France at about a one hour drive south of Toulouse. The town is divided in two distinct areas with the lower town known as the Bastide and the upper town known as La Cité de Carcassonne.

What makes Carcassonne so unique is that there has been a fortified settlement here since the pre-Roman period on the hill where the actual Cité is located. From then on, the fortified settlement has always been upkept, making it one of the largest fortified towns in Europe.

A private guided tour of the Cité

A 2-hour private walking tour to discover the famous Cité de Carcassonne. Here, you will admire the castle and ramparts at the heart of the medieval city; explore the Cathedral and the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire; and visit la porte Narbonnaise, which was the principal entrance to the Cité. A dreamlike destination with a romantic ambience, this tour is tailor-made to enchant you.

Meet your English speaking local guide

Today, meet your English speaking licensed tour guide that is accredited to conduct visits in hisorical monuments, museums and historical towns. After a short presentation of the program and itinerary, it will be time to begin your tour in the medieval city of Carcassonne.

The Narbonne Gate

Main entrance gate to the Medieval City of Carcassonne, the Narbonne Gate (named after the town of Narbonne) was built around 1280 during of Philippe III and is made up of 2 huge spur towers. In the 19th century Viollet le Duc rebuilt the crenellations and the slate roof and added a draw bridge that did not exist originally. On the right, one can see the sculpture of Lady Carcas. Your tour guide will certainly mention her Legend during the tour.

The Lists of Carcassonne

This space between the two ramparts, a little over 1 km in circumference, was leveled in the 13th century, when the 2nd wall was being erected. It is always interesting to begin the tour of the Lists by heading to the right towards Porte d'Aude as rapidly, one discovers the old ramparts that date back to Roman times. By seeing this, the visitor faces more than 20 centuries of history! Your guide will certainly show you how to spot the old ramparts compared to the new (13th century) ones.

In the 18th century, the poorest Carcassonnais built their homes there before they were destroyed during the restoration of the medieval city by Viollet le Duc in the 19th century. Today, the lists allow you to discover the different characteristics of military architecture and offer beautiful views of the Bastide Saint Louis, the Pyrenees and the Black Mountains. Every summer there are chivalry tournaments take place within the Lists.

The Count's Castle

Ultimate defense, the Count's castle (Château Comtal) was built in the twelfth century by the Trencavel, viscounts of Carcassonne, and was constantly restored or modified over the following centuries. The Castle is in fact a fortress within a fortress.

To access the Count's castle one must first cross the two sets of ramparts before reaching this area. The Castle as you see it today was built by the French (the area was not French at the time of the Trencavel but Occitan), and the oldest parts of the castle are located within including the famous Pinte Tower.

It is possible to visit the Count's Castle during your private guide tour in Carcassonne. During the booking process you will asked if you would like to include the entrance tickets to the castle. If you choose this option, our team of travel specialists will take care of everything for you and most of all you will not have to wait in line!

Saint Nazary & Saint Celse Basilica

The Basilica of Carcassonne is without a doubt one of the highlights of a visit to the walled city. Only expert licensed tour guides will be able to conduct unique visits of this architectural splendor of the middle ages. Built between the 11th and 14th century the Basilica combines two distinct architectural styles: Romanesque and Gothic. The first church to be built on this location dates back to the 6th century under the reign of the Visigoths.

The construction of the Romanesque Cathedral began in 1096 and ended in 1130. Only the nave remains with its broken barrel arches sided by two collaterals made up of semi-circular arches. In 1269 it is decided to enlarge the Cathedral and thus a Gothic choire is built. The transept is also modified and this is when the Rose Windows and Stained Glass Windows are added. They are considered to be the most beautiful of all Southern France. Your guide will certainly point out the two most famous stained glass windows: The Tree of Jesse (13th century) and the Tree of Life (14th century).

After the visit of the Basilica, it will be time to stroll through the streets of the medieval town. Here, depending on your wishes or your guide, you will discover lesser known areas of Carcassonne where the majority of visitors do not go. Other interesting sites include the Great Well and Porte d'Aude. After the visit, that will be the end of our services.

Please remember to wear good walking shoes as the streets are all made out of cobbled stone.

[description] =>
Dijon's history is a tapestry woven with centuries of cultural, architectural, and historical significance. As the capital of the Burgundy region in France, the city boasts a rich heritage that dates back to Roman times and has shaped its identity over the ages. Follow a commented walking tour with an expert licensed tour guide. Visit the most emblematic monuments and lesser known cultural attractions this city has to offer.

Roman Origins:

Dijon's history can be traced back to Roman times when it was known as "Divio." It served as a strategic crossroads and was established as a key settlement due to its location on the trade route between Lyon and Paris. The city's early development was influenced by Roman architecture and urban planning, which can still be glimpsed in some of its structures.

Medieval and Renaissance Glory:

Dijon flourished during the medieval and Renaissance periods, becoming the seat of the powerful Dukes of Burgundy. The Palais des Ducs de Bourgogne (Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy) stands as a remarkable example of this era's architectural grandeur. The palace, characterized by its Gothic style, intricate sculptures, and rich ornamentation, served as both a residence and a symbol of the ducal authority.

Cultural Center:

Throughout its history, Dijon has been a hub of culture, learning, and creativity. The city was home to the renowned Dijon School of Painting during the 14th and 15th centuries, contributing to the development of artistic expression. The University of Burgundy, founded in the 18th century, added to Dijon's intellectual prominence and legacy.

Modern Times:

In more recent history, Dijon played a significant role during the French Revolution. The city embraced revolutionary ideals and became a focal point for revolutionary activities in the region. Dijon's rich history is also intertwined with the growth of the wine industry in Burgundy, which has contributed to the city's reputation as a culinary and viticultural destination.

Architectural Marvels:

Dijon's architectural landscape features a mix of styles, from Romanesque and Gothic to Renaissance and neoclassical. The city's churches, including the Notre-Dame de Dijon Cathedral and the Church of Saint-Michel, showcase stunning examples of religious architecture. The half-timbered houses, cobblestone streets, and well-preserved historic districts offer a glimpse into the past.

Culinary Heritage:

Dijon is synonymous with Dijon mustard, a condiment that originated in the city in the 18th century. The local gastronomy, deeply rooted in Burgundian traditions, offers a delightful array of flavors. The region's wines, particularly its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, are celebrated globally.

Dijon's history continues to shape its vibrant present. The city's commitment to preserving its heritage while embracing modernity has resulted in a captivating blend of the old and the new. From its architectural treasures to its cultural diversity, Dijon invites visitors to explore its storied past and immerse themselves in the unique ambiance that defines this remarkable French city.
